Job Duties

Virginia State University (VSU) seeks applicants for two Academic Advisor(s)/Educational Support Specialist(s) III for the Academic Center of Excellence (ACE). The successful candidate(s) will provide support services to freshmen and new student through intrusive academic advisement.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The Academic Advisor will deliver one-on-one academic advising to first-year and freshman and sophomore students. Meets with advises at least 3 times per semester. Maintain a calendar with a schedule for advising activities, walk-ins, appointments and intrusive advising activities. Maintain record of students served and provide a monthly report of the number of students that participate in advisement and registration. Review student progress and provide guidance and referral services to students. Utilize available technology (Navigate360) to create student interactions and to maintain on-going contact with students to ensure their persistence and retention towards degree completion. The position will prepare and maintain repots, and update the Director as appropriate; provide timely and accurate correspondence to students including emails, Navigate360 communication and other outreach efforts.

Minimum Qualifications

The Academic advisor should have excellent interpersonal, analytical and written and oral communications skills.

This person should have demonstrated working knowledge of student services in higher education, and be able to assess student needs.

Academic advisor should have the ability to work in a fast-paced environment with little supervision.

Must demonstrate strong analytical and organizational skills, while paying attention to detail and directing others toward completed actions.

The ability to work in a team environment, and perform effectively both independently and as a collaborator with diverse campus administrators, faculty, staff, and students.
