About the Team and Role
We are seeking a motivated and strongly technical specialist to join our Catastrophe Research team. Our team is a small, specialised group of applied researchers with advanced expertise and domain knowledge in atmospheric sciences, hydrology and seismology. Joining our team means working at the forefront of catastrophe science, shaping how research is applied in the insurance industry.
At Inigo we want to have the best Catastrophe Research in the market and to achieve that we focus on doing four things better than our peers:
* Maximizing the accuracy of the catastrophe models used by the business;
* Applying the best data and the latest technologies to improve our understanding of risk;
* Attracting and finding value from the world’s leading experts in natural catastrophe risk;
* Excelling at communicating our findings.
Succeeding at this involves undertaking deep-dive research into specific peril/region models, comparing vendor models with the latest science and ensuring that they are fit for purpose, designing appropriate model adjustment where necessary and working with other teams to ensure that our view of risk is represented at the point of underwriting.
Inigo is always looking to forge links with academia through research sponsorship so you will also have the opportunity to identify and manage potential avenues of engagement and research topics that will raise the profile of Inigo as a thought leader in catastrophe risk.
The successful candidate will do this by:
* Performing and documenting model evaluation deep dives for areas of high peril materiality and abridged model evaluations for lower materiality regions.
* Developing model adjustments as appropriate to define the “Inigo View of Risk” and communicating the rationale and results of changes to analytics and underwriting teams.
* Keeping abreast of the latest scientific research and emerging technologies to inform novel approaches to developing Inigo’s view of risk.
* Working in the days/months post-event to use loss data in validation/development of the Inigo view of risk.
* Assisting the provision of relevant model evaluation materials for company reporting.
* Presenting results regularly to a wide range of audiences including clients, brokers, senior management and investors.
* Representing Inigo at national and international scientific and industry forums.
* Presenting research, publish papers, and actively engage with Inigo research partners and the catastrophe modelling science community.
To do this, we’re going to need you to bring:
* A strong academic record, to degree level (2:1 or Higher or equivalent) and a higher degree (PhD) including a period of specific research with a focus in a risk sciences area such as meteorology, climatology, seismology, or hydrology.
* Strong proficiency in programming languages for data analysis (e.g. Python, R, SQL) with a strong preference for candidates who have hands-on experience applying machine learning or AI techniques to real-world problems.
* The ability to and interest in working collaboratively across different teams (analysts, underwriters, data scientists and external vendors).
* An analytical mindset with the aptitude to identify key issues and the ability to develop solutions.
* A keen focus on accuracy, timeliness, and attention to detail.
* Comfort in presenting both internally to senior management and investors and externally to clients or at industry or academic conferences.
* The ability to develop positive, open working relationships with model vendors to understand their models better.
* Commitment to our values. This means being curious, collaborative, loving what you do and sharing that with others and staying focused on the things that matter and that have a positive impact on the business.
* It would also be beneficial if you have a strong interest or knowledge of the key principles of commercial catastrophe models, climate models and the data and formats used in climate modelling.
