Role Overview
Oikos are seeking a proactive and hands-on Health & Safety Advisor to support our HSEQ Manager in ensuring the safe and compliant operation of our Upper Tier COMAH facility at Canvey Island, Essex, UK. The role has a strong focus on occupational health & safety, while also contributing to process safety management and supporting continuous improvement across the site.
The successful candidate will bring a practical approach to workplace safety, with the confidence to engage colleagues at all levels, and the technical knowledge to support regulatory compliance in a high-hazard industry.
Key Responsibilities
* Support the implementation and monitoring of the company's Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality (HSEQ) management systems in line with COMAH, HSE, and EA requirements.
* Conduct workplace inspections, audits, and risk assessments, ensuring hazards are identified, controlled, and communicated effectively.
* Provide practical, hands-on support to line managers and employees on occupational health and safety matters.
* Assist in accident/incident investigations, ensuring root causes are identified and corrective actions implemented.
* Support the management of process safety elements, including permit-to-work systems, management of change, and emergency response preparedness.
* Develop and deliver toolbox talks, training sessions, and safety communications to enhance workforce competence and engagement.
* Maintain accurate safety records and contribute to regulatory reporting requirements.
* Actively contribute to the continuous improvement of site safety culture, driving initiatives that embed safe behaviours across all operations.
* Provide support during internal and external audits, inspections, and regulatory visits (HSE, EA, local authority).
Qualifications & Experience
* NEBOSH National General Certificate (minimum) – NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent desirable.
* Membership of IOSH (TechIOSH or higher).
* Previous experience in a high-hazard industry (e.g. bulk liquid storage, refining, petrochemicals, terminals, or similar).
* Strong knowledge of UK health & safety legislation, COMAH regulations, and occupational safety practices.
* Experience in conducting incident investigations and risk assessments.
* Confident communicator with the ability to engage the workforce at all levels.
* Practical, hands-on approach with strong problem-solving skills.
* Computer literate with experience in using HSEQ systems and Microsoft Office.
