Job Introduction
Readymix Technical Manager – North West & Yorkshire
Role Purpose
Provide strategic and operational leadership to the North Readymix technical function, ensuring the highest standards of safety, product quality, and compliance.
Drive technical excellence to support commercial growth, particularly through value-added product (VAP) development, while improving operational efficiency, sustainability performance, and customer satisfaction. This role is integral to delivering innovation, enabling major project success, and strengthening the business’s competitive position.
Key Responsibilities
Health, Safety & Environment (HSE)
1. Champion a zero-harm culture and lead by example in all HSE matters.
2. Embed best practice across the technical and wider Readymix teams.
3. Ensure all technical activities support safe systems of work and environmental compliance.
Leadership & People Development
4. Lead, coach, and develop a high-performing technical team across the region.
5. Build capability, succession, and engagement within the technical function.
6. Foster a culture of accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement.
Technical & Operational Excellence
7. Ensure full compliance with BS EN, BS, and company quality standards.
8. Oversee mix design optimisation to maximise performance, efficiency, and cost control.
9. Drive improvements in plant performance through data-led analysis and intervention.
10. Lead root cause analysis and resolution of quality issues, complaints, and non-conformances.
Commercial Support & Growth
11. Partner with commercial teams to identify and deliver profitable growth opportunities.
12. Drive the development and adoption of Value-Added Products (VAPs).
13. Provide technical expertise to support tenders, specifications, and major project delivery.
14. Strengthen customer relationships through proactive technical engagement and problem-solving.
Innovation & Sustainability
15. Promote lower-carbon concrete solutions and sustainable material usage.
16. Support delivery of decarbonisation and circular economy initiatives.
17. Identify and implement innovative materials, technologies, and processes.
Stakeholder Collaboration
18. Act as a key member of the regional management team, contributing to business strategy and performance.
19. Work cross-functionally with operations, commercial,logistics, and procurement teams.
20. Engage with customers, specifiers, contractors, and industry bodies to enhance reputation and influence.
Key Measures of Success (KPIs)
21. Zero harm performance and improved safety culture indicators.
22. Increased technical team capability, engagement, and retention.
23. Reduction in quality-related incidents, complaints, and associated costs.
24. Measurable improvements in material efficiency and cost optimisation.
25. Delivery of continuous improvement initiatives with quantified benefits.
26. Growth in VAP volumes, margins, and specification wins.
27. Successful technical delivery on major projects and key accounts.
28. Compliance with all regulatory and internal quality standards.
Experience & Skills
Essential
29. Significant experience within the Readymix Concrete or wider construction materials industry.
30. Strong technical expertise in concrete technology, materials, and standards.
31. Proven leadership experience managing technical or operational teams.
32. Strong commercial acumen with the ability to influence business performance.
33. Data-driven mindset with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
34. Excellent communication and stakeholder management capabilities.
Desirable
35. Chartered status or professional accreditation (e.g.Institute of Concrete Technology).
36. Experience supporting major infrastructure or large-scale construction projects.
37. Knowledge of sustainability and low-carbon concrete technologies.
