The role
We’re looking for a Data Network Engineer to take a hands‑on role in the full lifecycle of our network solutions. From initial design through to configuration, support, and ongoing improvement, you’ll be working across a diverse and evolving environment, enabling the secure and reliable operation of SSE Transmission’s growing energy network. This isn’t about pulling cables or installing hardware; it’s about designing and configuring robust, fit‑for‑purpose networks that connect remote sites, substations, and control systems across Scotland.
Responsibilities
* Contribute to the design and delivery of network solutions within the Cyber Resilience for Operational Technology (CROT) Programme, working closely with colleagues and applying agreed standards.
* Provide specialist input on the Operational Technology (OT) network, supporting its development, configuration, and ongoing improvement.
* Maintain a detailed understanding of network topology (logical and physical) across LAN and WAN environments, including hands‑on discovery where needed.
* Support the development of network strategy as part of the wider OT roadmap, collaborating with suppliers to help bring strategic plans into action.
* Assess network risks and shape practical mitigations, while exploring new technologies and approaches that strengthen resilience and performance.
Qualifications
* Solid experience in designing and configuring network solutions, with a good working knowledge of LAN, WAN, QoS, and firewall technologies.
* A strong understanding of network security principles and the ability to apply practical mitigations in real‑world environments.
* Clear and confident communication skills – able to explain technical concepts to different audiences and contribute to documentation, designs, and discussions.
* A methodical approach to problem‑solving, with the ability to turn ideas and requirements into workable plans, designs, or reports.
* Hands‑on experience with Cisco networking (including multi‑site Cisco fabric networks) and Palo Alto firewalls, ideally covering both design and operational aspects.
