On average 40+ hours per week, shifts as per site rota. 5 on 2 off, Monday to Sunday 07:00am - 23:00pm. Weekend working is compulsory

What The Role Is
The Environmental Enforcement Officer plays a crucial role in maintaining public health, safety and environmental standards by enforcing environmental laws and regulations. The position involves investigating environmental violations, issuing warnings, fines or citations and educating the public about environmental responsibilities. The officer will work closely with local authorities, businesses and residents to promote compliance and help reduce environmental crimes such as littering, fly‑tipping and pollution.
Main Responsibilities
* Assist the Council in the investigation of complaints made by members of the public
* Daily liaison with the Council
* Provide statistical data to the Council and handle freedom of information requests
* Lead from the front and issue Fixed Penalty Notices whilst in a front‑line role
* Monitor conduct and performance of the team
* Ensure the smooth running of the team
* Provide theory and front‑line training to new team members
* Provide on‑the‑ground support as required
* Document processes across the enforcement teams
* Keep up to date with legislation and relay this information to the team
* Conduct officer appraisals
* Compile initial prosecution files and liaise with the Local Authority legal team
* Perform any other reasonable tasks under instruction of the Operations Manager
* Produce statistical reports on a daily, monthly and yearly basis
About You
* Experience in a similar leadership role is essential
* Knowledge of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and Anti‑Social Behaviour Crime and Policing Act 2014 would be advantageous
* The ability to communicate with offenders, often in demanding circumstances, in a professional manner
* Previous experience in a customer service role and handling difficult situations professionally
* Will be happy working outdoors, on foot in all seasons and carrying out foot patrols for prolonged periods
* Professional in approach, with a balanced sense of judgement and capable of acting with conscience and integrity
* Have the ability to use own initiative while being able to work within a team environment
* Own transport
Environmental Law Enforcement
* Enforce environmental regulations and local by‑laws relating to littering, fly‑tipping, graffiti, waste management, noise pollution and other environmental concerns
* Patrol assigned areas to detect violations and ensure compliance with environmental laws
* Investigate reports of environmental offences from the public and respond promptly to complaints
Issuing Fines and Notices
* Issue Fixed Penalty Notices (FPNs) and citations to individuals or businesses for non‑compliance with environmental laws
* Prepare and serve legal documents, including warning notices and fines, in accordance with local laws
* Conduct follow‑up visits to ensure compliance with issued notices and take further action if necessary
Investigation and Reporting
* Investigate environmental offences such as illegal dumping, abandoned vehicles and unlawful waste disposal by gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses and preparing case files
* Use surveillance equipment, including cameras, to monitor and collect evidence of environmental crimes
* Report findings to senior management and collaborate with legal teams to pursue prosecutions when necessary
Court Proceedings and Legal Support
* Prepare case files for prosecution, including collecting evidence, photographs and witness statements
* Attend court proceedings and present evidence as required to support legal action against environmental offenders

Learning and Development
Participate in our training course to gain insight into daily duties, current legislation, communication and interaction aspects of the role, earning a recognised qualification in environmental awareness.
