Job Summary

Working as part of the Teesside Hospice multi-disciplinary team in our 10-bed in-patient unit, we're sure you will find working with us rewarding. The Ideal Candidate Will Have: A current NMC registration, Relevant post-registration experience, Excellent communication and team working skills and a can-do attitude, The desire and ability to work within a palliative care setting and to fully understand each patient\'s individual needs.


Main Duties of the Job

The Registered Nurse is responsible for assisting, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care under minimum supervision. This includes supervision of both qualified and support staff, and of student nurses during their allocation. As IPU provides twenty-four hour care a willingness to work days and nights is preferred.

The Registered Nurse will work within the framework of the Multidisciplinary team providing a high standard of care for the patients and support for their relatives and to assist in the nursing team development by keeping abreast of change, involving evidence base and directives from government/organisational policies.

The post holder is required to have first level registration. Previous Palliative Care experience would be an advantage.

Job Description


Job responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities

* To be a competent practitioner and work within the NMC code of professional conduct, ensuring all staff within the sphere of responsibilities follow the code.
* Maintain professional registration and meet revalidation requirements.
* Ensure safe administration and storage of all medications.
* Maintain confidentiality including accurate and timely records.
* Use evidence to underpin practice and development of specialist palliative care.
* Assess, plan, implement and evaluate care within the nursing team and document it.
* Liaise with multidisciplinary team, internally and externally.
* Adhere to Teesside Hospice policies, procedures, guidelines and standards.
* Attend annual appraisal and regular reviews of performance and objectives; identify knowledge/skill gaps and develop a plan to enhance service and self-development.
* Promote Teesside Hospice philosophy and public image; cooperate with outside agencies to uphold the charity\'s image.
* Communicate effectively with all team members and develop relationships with community teams.
* Participate in mandatory Clinical supervision and supervise support workers within the team.
* Undertake risk assessment and management to ensure safety of staff, families and visitors.
* Aware of adult and child protection procedures; attend safeguarding training and adhere to Local Safeguarding Procedures.
* Carry out effective complaint, accident and incident reporting.
* Participate in Clinical Governance framework and IPC procedures.
* Support patient and family at time of death respecting beliefs, culture and religion.
* Be flexible and proactive regarding changes in the Hospice; undertake administration changes as per policy.
* Participate in clinical audit and risk management to improve practice.
* Demonstrate reflective thinking/action to develop practice and standards on the unit.
* Prescribe medication in accordance with Teesside Hospice Policy and procedures working within your sphere of expertise and competence if you are a registered nurse prescriber.

Management Responsibilities

* Adhere to all medication policy and standard operating procedures at all times.
* Maintain positive working relationships with each part of the integrated services within the Hospice.
* Liaise with all services ensuring safe Hospice discharges, and to facilitate the continuing care of patients in their own home.
* Promote safety, well-being and interests of patients, staff and visitors.
* Be familiar with Hospice policies and procedures, and know where they are kept to allow access to self or other staff when needed.
* Monitor the nursing teams\' performance and support Volunteers working in the clinical area.

Educational And Personal Responsibilities

* Maintain a personal awareness of professional developments in nursing and palliative care.
* Undertake appropriate further education to meet own and organisation needs.
* Maintain professional practice in line with NMC Revalidation.
* Attend and contribute to group and/or individual clinical supervision.


Qualifications

Essential

* RGN

Desirable

* 6 months post-qualification experience
* Palliative care course


Experience

Essential

* Understanding of the principles of palliative care
* Experience of working with palliative care patients

Desirable

* Basic counselling skills
* Experience of caring for patients with life-limiting illness (cancer and non-cancer)

* A commitment to patient-focused holistic care and willingness to advance practice
* A commitment to developing personal professional development and lifelong learning
