What you'll do

As Manager Finance based in Derby, you'll be at the forefront of guiding the organisation's financial direction while fostering a collaborative environment. Your daily work will involve partnering closely with senior leaders to craft strategic plans, ensuring accurate and timely delivery of complex reporting requirements, and providing trusted advice on compliance matters. By nurturing your team through coaching initiatives, you'll build capacity for future success. Alongside driving operational improvements across systems and processes, you'll champion workplace health and safety initiatives that protect staff wellbeing.

* Provide inspiring strategic direction by managing staff, resources, and services to ensure exceptional financial service delivery throughout the organisation.
* Oversee the meticulous preparation of statutory reports including annual budgets, mid‑year reviews, quarterly management reports, annual financial statements, and other essential documentation.
* Develop comprehensive financial plans that align with Council's strategic objectives and initiatives.
* Offer expert guidance to Council members and staff on all aspects of financial management, compliance matters, and best practice procedures.
* Supervise the rating function in accordance with relevant legislation such as the Local Government Act 1995 and associated regulations.
* Collaborate enthusiastically with external auditors, consultants, and regulatory bodies during statutory audits and reviews, implementing audit findings effectively.
* Drive continuous improvement by reviewing existing financial systems and processes, initiating enhancements in software operations, business procedures, and service delivery models for greater efficiency.
* Cultivate harmonious relationships with internal and external customers by delivering prompt, courteous responses to enquiries in line with the Customer Service Charter.
* Champion workplace health and safety by complying with statutory obligations, participating in preventative strategies, supporting WHS committees, and promoting safe work practices across all teams.
* Maintain accurate records of all activities in accordance with established guidelines to ensure transparency and accountability throughout all financial operations.


What you bring

Your background as Manager Finance showcases not only technical mastery but also outstanding interpersonal strengths. You bring deep expertise in statutory reporting requirements and hands‑on experience developing budgets aligned with organisational goals. Your ability to communicate complex concepts simply keeps stakeholders informed throughout decision‑making processes. You excel at coaching others, navigating challenges efficiently, and maintaining a focus on continuous improvement. Familiarity with council rates management and advanced IT skills further enhances your ability to streamline operations for greater efficiency.

* A tertiary qualification in finance or accounting is essential; CA or CPA membership along with ongoing professional development is highly regarded.
* Demonstrated expertise in preparing Annual Financial Reports, General Purpose Financial Statements, Statutory Budgets with a thorough understanding of Australian Accounting Standards.
* Extensive experience in financial services including strategic planning, statutory reporting, budgeting, and management reporting—ideally within local government or business environments.
* Comprehensive knowledge of Council rates management, including rates modelling and familiarity with Local Government Act 1995 regulations for differential rates.
* Proven leadership experience in coaching and mentoring staff within collaborative teams using modern HR practices.
* Exceptional written and verbal communication skills required to present complex financial information clearly to diverse audiences.
* Strong analytical abilities combined with negotiation skills to mediate between varied stakeholders for positive outcomes.
* Self‑motivation paired with a proactive approach ensures continuous improvement alongside high‑quality customer service delivery.
* Advanced proficiency in accounting software packages and Microsoft programs; experience implementing system enhancements is desirable.
* At least three years' experience in similar roles within Local Government plus prior exposure to IT Vision Synergy Soft enterprise reporting programme is advantageous.
