Offer description

Overview

Are you interested in a role with flexible working hours, allowing you to meet people from diverse communities and make a positive impact on your local community? The Office for National Statistics (ONS) is the UK’s largest producer of official statistics, covering key economic, social and demographic topics including measuring changes in the value of the UK economy, estimating population size and distribution, and providing indicators of price inflation, employment, earnings, crime and migration. This is an exciting opportunity to join a modern, innovative and inclusive team at the heart of public service delivery.

Role

This is a great opportunity to join our team as a Field Interviewer working for the Office for National Statistics via AMS. As a Field Interviewer carrying out official surveys you will help inform Government about the state of the nation. The role will start with 5 weeks of comprehensive training to ensure your success. The Field Interviewer role is a mix of visiting sampled addresses to encourage survey completion and interviewing respondents in their homes. This role is not office based. You are required to work within a 40-mile radius (approx.) of an allocated location. Work will be allocated to fit within your contracted hours in this area, so consider how your home location compares to your chosen location preference.

This role comes with flexible working hours, broadly equivalent to 22 hours per week. Interviews will need to be conducted between 09:00 – 20:00 with potential for admin and travel time outside these hours. Interviewers will work across mornings, afternoons and evenings and are contracted to work Monday to Saturday.

What we are looking for

We are looking for individuals with a friendly, outgoing personality and the confidence to approach and converse with a wide selection of people. You will need excellent communication skills to be the face of ONS and, where needed, to persuade reluctant members of the public to participate in surveys. You will also be responsible for planning, organising and managing your own workload; we provide full training and support.

Responsibilities

* Visit sampled addresses to encourage survey participation and interview respondents in their homes.
* Complete surveys in line with training and quality standards.
* Plan, organise and manage your own workload with support and training provided.
* Transport and carry equipment (e.g., laptop and survey materials) and navigate addresses, including stairs when in the field.
* Ensure work is completed within a 40-mile radius of the allocated location and within contracted hours.

Requirements

* Live within a 10-mile radius of the location and be able to travel to addresses within a 40-mile radius from the advertised location.
* Interviews conducted between 09:00 – 20:00; hours split across mornings, afternoons and evenings, with potential Saturday work.
* Experience of using a laptop and a smartphone.
* Self-disciplined, self-motivated and able to work without supervision.
* Excellent verbal communication skills and enjoy meeting people.
* Be able to transport and carry equipment and navigate stairs when out in the field.
* Full valid UK Driving Licence (including rights of EU Nationals) and full use of a car for work purposes including business use.
* Proof of Identity and broadband internet connection at your home address prior to taking up employment.

Competencies

* Communication and Influencing
* Problem Solving and Prioritisation
* Resilience
* Ability to use technology will be assessed during the selection process.

Selection process details

Assessment at application stage will be based on work history, skills and experience and personal statement. If successful, you will be invited to a video interview lasting 30–45 minutes, where you will be asked to provide evidence supporting your application. Familiarise yourself with the required competencies before the interview and prepare questions to ask.

Security

Successful candidates must undergo Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) checks and a criminal record check.
