Role Summary:
The Mechanical Superintendent will direct, oversee, and coordinate mechanical installation and construction activities on a nuclear construction project. You will ensure all work is delivered safely, to the highest quality standards, on schedule, and within budget, in accordance with UK legislation, British Standards, and Nuclear Site Licence conditions.
You will be accountable for managing and monitoring multiple teams led by frontline supervisors, ensuring they achieve safety, quality, and productivity targets.
Key Duties:
Health, Safety & Nuclear Safety Culture
- Promote and maintain a robust health, safety, and nuclear safety culture across all activities.
- Conduct site inspections to ensure compliance with safety standards and statutory obligations.
- Deliver safety briefings, toolbox talks, and pre-/post-task meetings.
- Act as a visible safety leader, ensuring best practice is consistently implemented.
Team Leadership & Management
- Direct and manage a team of 3–5 Supervisors, each responsible for 8–12 operatives.
- Provide coaching, guidance, and performance management for Supervisors and operatives.
- Maintain discipline, morale, and timekeeping standards across the workforce.
- Ensure Supervisors and their teams receive technical instruction, resources, and training.
- Develop and implement training programmes for Supervisors and operatives.
Planning & Coordination
- Oversee and coordinate mechanical construction activities in accordance with project schedules.
- Develop and review fortnightly and monthly programmes, ensuring optimal resource allocation.
- Monitor progress, report performance, and resolve issues affecting productivity.
- Collaborate with other project teams (engineering, logistics, planning, scheduling) to align work with the project critical path.
- Ensure technical queries are resolved promptly through liaison with Engineering teams.
Quality & Compliance
- Implement and ensure adherence to Inspection & Test Plans (ITPs).
- Ensure works are executed in accordance with project specifications, British Standards, and nuclear regulations.
- Produce and review method statements, risk assessments, and quality records.
- Monitor and inspect works to ensure safety, quality, and schedule targets are achieved.
- Identify opportunities for improvement and implement best practice.
Essential Qualifications:
- Client/Contractor National Safety Group (CCNSG) Safety Passport.
- Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS).
- Level 3 apprenticeship in a mechanical discipline in one of the following:
- Engineering construction
- Pipefitting
- Standard or mechanical or plating
- Maintenance and operations engineering technician
- Metal fabricator
- Project control technician.
Essential Experience:
- Extensive experience managing multi-skilled electrical teams in an industrial or nuclear environment.
- Demonstrated leadership of operatives and Supervisors on complex construction projects.
- Comprehensive knowledge of UK health, safety, and environmental legislation.
- Commercial awareness of site productivity, labour hours, and waste management.
- Excellent problem-solving and decision-making capabilities.
- Strong communication skills, with experience delivering briefings and reports.
- Ability to establish effective working relationships across project teams and contractors.
