Job overview

We are seeking to a 0.6WTE Consultant in Palliative Medicine to join an enthusiastic and committed team providing support to patients within Liverpool and South Sefton. We are seeking highly motivated, dynamic and enthusiastic individuals to support the development and delivery of our newly integrated services across the city.

The services across Liverpool have undergone complete transformation following the merger of Aintree and the Royal Liverpool hospitals, the transfer of clinical services from Woodlands Hospice into LUHFT, and the local re-modelling of palliative care services in 2020 to form the Integrated Mersey Palliative Care Team (IMPaCT).

IMPaCT provides a fully integrated holistic palliative care service across the city, in collaboration with our partners at Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust, Marie Curie Hospice Liverpool and Woodlands Hospice, with a single point of access and referral into services for patients, carers and health care professionals.

The post holder will be employed by Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and will primarily support the delivery of in-patient and ambulatory services based at Woodlands Hospice, including the new IMPaCT virtual ward.

Applicants are required to be on the Specialist Register and have their CCT in Palliative Medicine or be within six months of obtaining it by the interview date. Full Registration and Licensing with the GMC is essential.


Main duties of the job

The appointee, together with his or her colleagues will have a commitment to the provision of consultant medical cover within the Integrated Palliative Care medical team across the sites. The post includes 6 Programmed activities (PAs) and the main commitments of this post in the first year (subject to annualised job planning) are proposed as follows:

· support to the in-patient unit at Woodlands Hospice

· support to the ambulatory/ out-patient services within the IMPaCT North service based at Woodlands Hospice, including the virtual ward

The post holder will be expected to provide cross cover support to other services when required and undertake community visits where necessary to promote continuity of care for patients.

It is expected that the appointee will participate in the current second on call medical rota for weeknights (5pm – 9am) and weekends (5pm Friday to 9am Monday), covering the North Liverpool/ South Sefton locality, which includes the Woodlands hospice inpatient unit, the virtual ward, Aintree hospital and the 24-hour IMPaCT North advice line, currently on a 1:8 basis. This post has a commitment of 0.5PA (1.5hrs) per day at weekends to support the virtual ward remotely, with compensatory TOIL of 1PA to be taken the week after the on call.

Person specification


Qualifications

* MB ChB (or equivalent)
* MBBS (or equivalent)
* Higher degree such as MSC, MD or PhD
* Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians


Registration

* Full registration with the GMC and licence to practise (or eligible for)
* Entry on GMC Specialist Register for Palliative Medicine via CCT (or proposed CCT date within 6 months of interview), CESR or European Community Rights


Knowledge and skills

* Broad experience in management of palliative care patients in all settings
* Evidence of continuing medical education.
* Advanced Communication Skills
* Demonstrates clinical judgement based on evidence based practice
* Previous clinical experience at consultant level


Teaching & training

* Evidence of delivery of palliative care and communication skills education to undergraduate and postgraduate students from a multi-disciplinary background.
* Teaching qualification eg PGCE
* Attendance at Train the Trainer or similar course
* Evidence of training in appraisal/ educational supervision


Clinical Governance & Audit

* Understanding of NHS management structures and the principles of Clinical Governance
* Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
* Ability to assess, contain and manage clinical risk and support other colleagues in doing the same
* Thorough understanding of the principles of clinical audit
* Publication of audit results


Management and Leadership

* Demonstrate an understanding of the management and financial challenges within an NHS Foundation Trust and the charitable sector
* Experience of implementing service change to enhance the quality of patient care
* Ability to think strategically about the wider needs of patients and the service
* Ability to support junior medical staff, act as a role model and respond appropriately to any concerns
* Ability to provide consultant level leadership within the MDT
* Able to demonstrate a collaborative and inclusive approach to management and clinical leadership
* Management course in NHS and voluntary sector


Research

* Understanding principles of research
* Evidence of enthusiasm for involvement in researchProven track record in research including success in obtaining funding and publication
