The post holder will work within a site‑based medical workforce deployment office (LGI/SJUH) to deliver the Medical Workforce Strategy through the implementation of medical workforce projects, including temporary medical agency utilisation and deployment of medical workforce through e‑rostering/bank systems.


Main duties of the job

To work within a Medical Deployment/Bank Office team to provide a quality medical deployment service within Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, managing junior doctor rota gaps, recording of resignations, swaps, absence and sickness and booking internal bank doctors and agency doctors as requested by medical departments. The medical deployment/bank service will:

1. Ensure that the e‑Rostering system has the correct Doctors Roster System (DRS) templates against each roster.
2. Upload junior doctors and align them to rosters from the Electronic Staff Record (ESR).
3. Produce live rosters from the templates.
4. Manage real‑time resignations, swaps, sickness and absence recording on the e‑Rostering system.
5. Identify and monitor breaches of safe working hours that will impact patient care as stipulated within the rules of the Junior Doctor Contract 2016, escalating and identifying alternative solutions.
6. Manage junior doctor rota gaps, including securing the recruitment of medical bank staff and temporary staffing solutions in conjunction with senior medical staff.


Job Summary

The Medical Deployment Officer sits within the Corporate HR Directorate of Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and is part of the Medical Deployment Office team, reporting to the Medical Deployment Team Leader and accountable to the Medical Workforce Manager (Resident Doctors). The role plays a key part in delivering the Trust’s Medical Workforce Strategy by supporting medical workforce projects such as Resident Doctor rota management, temporary staffing via internal bank and agency, and the effective use of erostering systems. The post is site‑based, working at St James’s University Hospital (SJUH), providing a seven‑day service to ensure safe and compliant medical staffing levels across designated specialties.

What you will bring to the role

Key aspects of the role that will strongly appeal to our department include:
* Playing a central role in ensuring safe medical staffing by managing junior doctor rotas, gaps and cover across LGI and SJUH.
* Working hands‑on with erostering, bank and agency systems to deliver real‑time workforce solutions in a fast‑paced environment.
* Having delegated responsibility to make decisions that directly impact service delivery, patient safety and compliance with the Junior Doctor Contract 2016.
* Acting as a key liaison between clinicians, rota coordinators, HR, payroll and external agencies, building trusted professional relationships.
* Analysing complex rota and workforce data to identify risks, breaches and practical solutions.
* Supporting and supervising junior team members, sharing knowledge and maintaining high service standards.
* Managing competing priorities under pressure while maintaining accuracy, professionalism and attention to detail.
* Gaining specialist expertise in medical workforce deployment within a large, complex NHS Trust.
* Contributing to continuous improvement of workforce processes, systems and ways of working.


Person Specification


Qualifications

* 5 GCSE (A* to C grade) including Maths and English (or equivalent).


Experience

* Previous experience of working within a large, complex organisation.
* Significant administrative experience, preferably in the NHS or similar complex organisation.
* Able to assimilate information relating to staff rotas as basis for identifying and resolving problems.
* More thorough knowledge and experience of Junior Doctor Contract 2016.
