Are you a proactive engineering technician, with a collaborative approach and supportive approach to leadership?
About us
The Technical Services department provides workshop and technical services across the Science Museum, maintaining a diverse array of interactive exhibits, providing locksmith services and producing exhibit mounts for exhibitions. This skilled technical team supports the museum in delivering an ambitious programme of activities ensuring a high-quality visitor experience.
To support this work, we are now looking for a Lead Engineering Technician to join us at the Science Museum on a full-time, permanent basis.
About the role
As a Lead Engineering Technician, you could be carrying out preventative maintenance on any one of our interesting attractions, including the water feature and the full range of exciting interactives in the Wonderlab gallery. You will take a proactive role in identifying and implementing improvements in the electromechanical systems of existing exhibits and working objects, and organising or carrying out repairs where necessary. You will act as the department representative in gallery project meetings, providing advice and feedback on technical drawings, design feasibility, locks and maintenance requirements, and assisting in the identification of areas for exhibit improvement, creating technical drawings and designs.
About you
Your pragmatic and knowledgeable approach to engineering problems will mean you can identify solutions to problems that affect the maintainability of future galleries. Your solid grounding in practical Health & Safety sees you helping in the implementation of safe systems of work within your department. Experience of working in a workshop environment working with hand tools and machinery including Lathes and Milling Machines will be helpful. As an integral member of your team, you keep an eye on the bigger picture, helping to move projects forward where you can, all the while standing by with your team to provide reactive assistance to on-gallery staff where needed.
Don't feel you meet all the criteria? We welcome you to apply even if your experience doesn't match directly. With your transferable skills, you could be the right candidate for this, or other opportunities that we have.
