Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) is a distinctive, unique institution, rooted in the Liverpool City Region and with a global presence. Our students and staff, past, present, and future, are the beating heart of our city and can be found in every corner of every industry and community. We couldn’t exist anywhere else and have shaped the city in which we belong. Working with the people of Liverpool to improve lives and support communities is at the heart of why we were founded and why we exist today.
The School of Humanities and Social Science is seeking to appoint a Lecturer in Irish History, on a full-time, fixed-term basis for up to ten months, to cover a period of research leave.
History at LJMU is a well-established subject with a strong research profile and a score of 93% for ‘teaching on my course’ in the 2023 National Student Survey. It currently comprises sixteen members of staff teaching a broad range of modules from the eighteenth century onwards and covering Britain, Ireland, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, the Americas, and Asia. Details of the current research interests in History at LJMU can be found at History Research Group.
You will lead and teach two existing undergraduate modules related to Modern Irish history:
* The Level 5 module, 5109HIST: Ireland, 1690-1920, which introduces students to the main features of Irish History from the late seventeenth century to the establishment of the Irish Free State. The primary focus of the module is on the period from 1798 to 1916, examining the development of nationalism, republicanism, and unionism during this period.
* The Level 6 module, 6125HIST: Celebration and Commemoration in Irish History, which covers the range of ways that specific events in Irish history – including the 1798 Rebellion, the Great Irish Famine, and the 1916 Easter Rising – are remembered, commemorated, and represented by later generations.
You will also teach across a range of other core team-taught modules at Level 4 (4100HIST: Making History; 4101HIST Exploring History; 4103HIST: Lion Rampant, Lion Tamed: The Rise and Fall of the British Empire; and 4102HIST: Faces of Britain), and Level 5 (5101HIST: Debates in History). You will also supervise Level 5 research projects and Level 6 dissertations. There would be an additional expectation around the delivery of wider Foundation, undergraduate, and postgraduate teaching as required.
You should have completed a PhD in the discipline and have teaching experience at undergraduate level, specifically in Irish history. You should demonstrate the ability to teach innovatively, responsively, and flexibly. The department would welcome proposals from the BAME academic community, who have historically been under-represented in the profession.
Informal enquiries may be made to the Programme Leader for History, Dr Olivia Saunders. Email: O.R.Saunders@ljmu.ac.uk or telephone: 0151 231 3090.
In return, we offer an excellent benefits package including generous annual leave entitlement, pension scheme, induction and development support as well as family-friendly policies.
This is an exciting time to join the university as we deliver the LJMU Strategy 2030 and its vision of LJMU as an inclusive civic university transforming lives and futures, by placing students at the heart of everything we do.
If you feel that this is the role you have been looking for and your skills and experience can make a real difference at LJMU, we look forward to hearing from you.
Interviews are expected to take place in late June, with an anticipated start date of early September.
Please note all of our vacancies will be closed to applications at midnight on the advertised closing date, unless otherwise stated.
