Key Dimensions
* Undertakes direct patient care to infants requiring Special Care within the scope of an N.N.E.B diploma qualification or equivalent, under the supervision of a trained nurse.
* Competent in the use of specific medical devices required for the provision of special care.
* Contributes to resource management of the NICU/TCW.
* Responsible for implementation of effective quality neonatal care to infants requiring Special Care, under the supervision of the registered nurse, following a holistic family-centered model of practice.
Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as Priority and "At Risk" status employees, including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.
Clinical Responsibilities
* Under the supervision of a trained nurse, take responsibility for individual patient care as allocated by the nurse in charge.
* Undertake the following procedures and activities for babies and families requiring special care:
o Implement & evaluate the agreed plan of care, review and update the plan accordingly.
o Demonstrate an understanding of, assess, and evaluate care in relation to infant hygiene, nutritional care, thermoregulatory care, monitoring, and undertake associated practical aspects within the sphere of responsibility.
o Carry out daily checks and cleaning of specialised equipment used for infant feeding.
o Support and assist mothers in breast-feeding/expressing.
o Care for stable infants receiving both high and low flow oxygen, including associated monitoring.
o Care for infants with neonatal abstinence syndrome.
o Report any changes in the infant's condition to relevant personnel, and implement changes and evaluate care as directed.
o Participate in ward rounds.
o Act as second checker for specified oral medications.
o Ensure nurseries are adequately stocked.
o Act as an advocate, liaise, report and document any relevant nursing or social issues to the registered nurse.
o Demonstrate a basic understanding and practice of Child Protection including legislation and procedures.
o Attend social care meetings as required.
o Engage and interact effectively with carers, encouraging them to be actively involved in planning and delivering care to their infant, facilitating a complete transfer of care.
o Take a primary role in planning, family education and preparation for discharge.
o Undertake parent IBLS training.
o Document all care provided, ensuring all entries are countersigned by a trained member of staff.
o Undertake transfer of infant care to other wards, the Neonatal Outreach team, and discharge to the community.
* Actively engage in the promotion and maintenance of a high standard of neonatal care within the NICU/TCW environment.
