A dynamic and fast-paced charity is seeking an experienced Head of Welfare Services to lead a vital programme supporting veterans facing homelessness and complex challenges. This is a rewarding opportunity to shape and deliver life-changing support to those who have served.
You will take strategic and operational responsibility for a 28-bed HMO providing emergency and ongoing accommodation for veterans. Leading a dedicated team of three, you will oversee referrals, risk assessments, safeguarding, and the delivery of an 18-month holistic support programme designed to empower veterans towards independence.
This is a hands-on, reactive leadership role that requires resilience, compassion, and strong strategic oversight.
The Role - Head of Welfare Services
As Head of Welfare Services, you will:
Provide strategic leadership and stakeholder management across welfare services
Lead and manage the day-to-day operations of the emergency accommodation programme
Oversee referrals, conduct risk assessments, and ensure effective safeguarding practices
Develop, review and maintain welfare policies and strategic plans
Work collaboratively with internal teams to ensure the smooth running of the HMO, escalating risks and concerns appropriately
Build strong partnerships within the military community and wider charitable sector
Produce detailed performance reports for senior management, the Board and sub-committees
Contribute to annual planning and long-term development strategies
Oversee budgets and ensure effective use of funding
You will work closely with a Step-In Officer, Welfare Officer and Employability Coach to ensure veterans receive tailored, joined-up support.
About You
We are looking for a confident, strategic and motivational leader who brings:
Proven experience in welfare, safeguarding or support services
Experience supporting individuals with complex needs including homelessness, mental health and addiction
Strong risk assessment and case management experience
An engaging, empathetic and resilient leadership style
Excellent decision-making skills with the confidence to manage challenging situations
Strong analytical and report-writing abilities
Experience managing budgets and working within funded programmes
First Aid training (or willingness to obtain)
DBS clearance (or willingness to undertake a check)
