Description
Under the direction of the Principal and Clinical Coordinator at the COVE Extension School, the School Support Counselor is primarily responsible for providing a safe and secure school environment for students in grades 3 through 6 within a substantially separate special education classroom embedded within Plymouth South Middle School. The counselor should be knowledgeable of the school's therapeutic mission, treatment philosophy, and educational and behavioral support policies to effectively care for and supervise clients.
Responsibilities
1. Maintain supervision of the classroom and out-of-classroom spaces, collaborating with the school team to implement intervention strategies based on student IEP and treatment goals.
2. Engage students using co-regulation strategies to facilitate their rejoining of classes promptly and appropriately.
3. Build healthy relationships with clients through daily interactions aligned with social/emotional and behavioral support goals.
4. Assist with transitions between scheduled activities and participate in planning and activities with students in small groups or individually, in accordance with treatment plans.
5. Teach age-appropriate life and social skills through modeling, counseling, and other techniques; participate in growth-enhancing groups and activities; support classroom activities as needed.
6. Maintain a safe, organized, and supportive environment, overseeing various areas and ensuring adequate supervision.
7. Provide behavior support and intervention, including physical restraint using TCI techniques when necessary, and coordinate medical or emergency responses.
8. Communicate effectively with staff regarding client progress and challenges.
9. Participate in faculty meetings, trainings, and supervision sessions.
10. Assist with residential student activities and be prepared to carry a mobile device if required.
11. Perform other duties as assigned, including providing First Aid when needed.
Qualifications
* High school diploma or equivalent.
* At least one year of child care experience in a residential setting with similar populations.
* Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Internet Explorer, with the ability to learn new software.

Physical Requirements
Ability to walk, stand, climb, and lift objects continuously during 7-8 hour shifts. Capable of effectively restraining using proper TCI techniques when necessary. Must be flexible and able to work extended shifts, with potential exposure to physical and behavioral challenges.
