About This Role
In addition to the responsibilities of class teacher as set out in the appropriate job description and the school teachers’ pay and conditions document, the Subject Leader will undertake the following duties and responsibilities.
Responsible to: The Headteacher
Responsible for: Leading Teaching and Learning in English, Reading and specifically Talk for Writing
Core purpose of the Subject Leader
To provide professional leadership and management for English to secure high quality teaching, effective use of resources and improved standards of learning and achievement for all learners. In the first instance a particular focus on improving writing using Talk for Writing and raising standards in reading.
Teaching, Learning and Standards
* To provide leadership in English, with particular focus on writing using Talk for Writing.
* To evaluate the effectiveness of teaching and learning in English and progress towards meeting agreed targets across the school, with particular focus on writing using Talk for Writing and continued improvement in reading.
* To secure, in collaboration with the Headteacher and senior colleagues, high standards of teaching and learning in English, reading and with particular focus on writing using Talk for Writing.
Leadership and Coordination
* To assume the role of ‘subject’ consultant for colleagues.
* To demonstrate, by practical example if appropriate, Talk for Writing strategies and show case strong examples of the teaching of reading.
* To inform parents/Governors if/when required regarding current thought and practice in English.
* Leadership of phonics and early reading.
To assist the Headteacher in ensuring the highest possible standards and quality of learning in English, reading and writing, using the school’s Teaching and Learning Policy as one means to achieve this.
* To oversee relevant INSET and share appropriate INSET activities with colleagues, in consultation with the Headteacher.
Supporting, Guiding and Motivating
* To take an active lead in relevant school-based INSET.
* To guide colleagues on appropriate INSET activities and encourage participation in consultation with the Headteacher.
Policy and Direction
* To keep abreast of developments in English, reading and in particular Talk for Writing.
* To lead colleagues in formulation, review and evaluation of policy, in consultation with the Headteacher and subject team.
* To ensure that policy reflects current national and local initiatives.
* To carry out an annual review of English following guidance issued.
* To establish/maintain a Subject Leader’s file.
Resourcing
* To identify needs and to resource English within the limits of given budget.
* To requisition items necessary to ensure effective learning and teaching of English, ensuring this covers phonics, reading and writing, in consultation with the Headteacher.
* To be responsible for checking, storing and ensuring appropriate use of related resources.
Liaison
* To liaise with other colleagues at St George’s Newtown in English as required.
