HMG is in the midst of an exciting transformation within our newly reimagined People Centre (formerly HR). We're integrating new systems, refining our processes, and building a future-ready foundation for our people operations.
We pride ourselves on a relaxed, family-oriented culture built on long service, mutual respect, and strong relationships. As we evolve, we're looking for a meticulous and dedicated Payroll Specialist to help shape robust and efficient processes that protect our people and reflect our values.
Role Summary
This is a pivotal role in ensuring the accurate, timely, and compliant processing of payroll across the organisation. Youll manage the full payroll cycle, audit our People and payroll systems, and support the administration of employee rewards and benefits. Youll also be a trusted point of contact for employees and managers, especially as we embed new systems and ways of working.
Key Responsibilities
Payroll Processing
* Process monthly payrolls including salaries, overtime, bonuses, and expenses
* Manage statutory and voluntary deductions (PAYE, NI, pensions, student loans, etc.)
* Handle starters, leavers, and employee changes (e.g. promotions, salary adjustments, tax codes)
* Ensure compliance with UK payroll legislation and HMRC regulations
* Administer SSP, SMP, SAP, SPP, SHPP and prepare BACS files for payments
Data Management & Auditing
* Maintain accurate payroll records in systems such as Employment Hero.
* Conduct regular reconciliations and audits to ensure data integrity
* Collaborate with People Centre to align People and payroll data
* Support year-end procedures including P60s, P11Ds, and statutory returns
Reporting & Analytics
* Run key People reports and audit HR data
* Generate payroll reports for Finance, HR, and leadership teams
* Support internal and external audits and stay current on payroll legislation
Reward & Benefits Administration
* Administer pension schemes, life assurance, and other benefits
* Manage benefit enrolments, renewals, and employee queries
* Support salary reviews and bonus calculations
Employee Support & Communication
* Be the go-to for payroll and benefit queries, offering clear and empathetic guidance
* Educate employees on payslips, tax codes, and deductions and be proactive in advising on changes
* Provide support on payroll policies and procedures
Process Improvement
* Identify and implement process improvements across payroll and People functions
* Help document and update payroll policies
* Support the rollout of new HR and payroll system features
What Youll Bring
* 5+ years in a payroll processing role
* Strong knowledge of UK payroll legislation and statutory payments
* Experience optimising and auditing HR/payroll systems and generating reports
* Proficiency in payroll software (e.g. Employment Hero etc.) and Excel (VLOOKUPs, pivot tables)
* Experience with employee benefits administration
* CIPP qualification or working towards one (desirable)
