Overview
The role of HCA is an essential part of our GP Practice team who provide the full range of NHS Primary Medical Services. You will be working alongside our friendly and patient focused clinical and management teams, providing an essential support function and delivering the best care to all our patients. You must work with autonomy and a high degree of confidentiality, sensitivity, discretion, empathy and tact.
Job responsibilities
Purpose: To assist the GP and practice nurse team in the service delivery and management of patients.
Overview of responsibilities:
* Establish and maintain communication with a range of people on a range of matters in a form that is appropriate to them and the situation.

Specific Responsibilities
Clinical Skills
* Undertake records and follow guidelines for the tasks for which you have received appropriate training.
* Chronic Disease Management
* Phlebotomy
* Urinalysis and preparation of specimens for investigation by the pathology laboratory
* Measuring and recording blood pressure, pulse rate and rhythm, temperature, height and weight
* Body mass index
* ECGs – preferable, but not essential
* Blood glucose monitoring
* Ear syringing
* NHS Healthchecks and new patient checks
* Prepare and maintain environments and equipment before, during and after patient care interventions
* Ensure rooms and clinical treatment rooms are clean and well stocked
* Undertake dressing procedures following local recommendations, complying with infection control principles and practice
* Give accurate and appropriate information to patients and groups within own competence
* Plan, develop and implement ways of raising and promoting awareness of health and well-being, keeping records of what has been done
* Provide support and encouragement to patients to self manage their conditions as appropriate
* Administer influenza, pneumococcal, Vitamin B12 vaccinations, Shingles, COVID
* Remove sutures and clips
* Act as a chaperone, when requested
* Record information and activities undertaken with patients and carers in an accurate and timely fashion using computer systems templates and Read codes
Supporting the clinical team
The healthcare assistant also provides support for other members of the primary healthcare team and contributes towards the coordination of the team activities.
Qualifications and experience
Essential
* General education to GCSE level C or above. HCA qualification or equivalent.
* At least 12 months working in general practice. Full knowledge of EMIS Web and Ardens Templates
Desirable
* HCA qualification or equivalent.
Other requirements
This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly known as CRB) to check for any previous criminal convictions.
