We’re on the hunt for three hands-on, practical Health & Safety Advisors to support our crews on major wind energy projects involving crane operations, heavy transport, mechanical/electrical installation, and specialist grouting.
About Us
Smith Crane and Construction is a family-owned business with over 30 years of experience, offering exceptional service across crane hire, civil construction (including marine civil and pre-cast manufacturing), transportation, and wind energy installation and maintenance. We pride ourselves on our strong team culture, commitment to safety, and continuing our family tradition of excellent customer focus and job execution.
About the Roles
You’ll be a key player in maintaining the client’s expected Health, Safety and Environmental standards alongside our own ISO 45001-certified system—helping ensure work is planned, briefed, and executed safely across the project. This is a shift-based, physically demanding role—not for the faint-hearted. You'll need to be solutions-focused, ready for early starts, and comfortable working outdoors in all conditions, side-by-side with our people on the ground.
Your three core responsibilities:
Safety Briefings & Training – Leading clear, practical pre-work briefings to ensure every task goes ahead as planned, with risks controlled and understood by all.
Incident Management & Investigation – Responding to incidents and near misses, leading or assisting with investigations, and ensuring corrective actions are implemented and closed out.
Driving Continuous Improvement – Supporting site managers to action inspection findings and hazard reports, keeping momentum on improvements that reduce risk.
What You’ll Really Be Doing
Leading and supporting pre-work briefings to ensure every shift starts with clear, shared understanding of the task, risks, controls, and responsibilities.
Being active and visible on-site—monitoring safety in real time and providing immediate, practical feedback.
Supporting teams with understanding and applying H&S procedures in a way that makes sense in the real world.
Investigating incidents and near misses and following through with documentation and practical solutions.
Being the go-to person for safety-related questions, advice, and support on the ground.
Who We’re Looking For
We’re not after clipboard-carriers or armchair safety cops—we need people with real-world experience, who can engage crews, stand confidently on a worksite, and help drive safety forward without losing the room.
You’ll bring:
Proven H&S experience in cranes, construction, heavy transport, electrical/mechanical work, or similar.
A physically fit, outdoors-ready mindset—comfortable working in all weather and on rotating shifts.
Strong communication skills with the confidence to deliver briefings and training to mixed crews.
A practical, no-nonsense approach that earns trust on-site.
Solid computer and admin skills to back up your fieldwork with effective reporting.
If you’re ready to step into a role that’s challenging, rewarding, and vital to the success of major renewable energy projects— We want to hear from you.
Please note successful candidates will be subject to pre-employment drug and alcohol testing and a pre-employment medical.
You must also have the right to legally live and work in New Zealand to be considered for this position.
