Consultant in Medical Microbiology and/or Infectious Diseases

This is an enticing opportunity to join our existing team of microbiologists and infectious diseases physiciansworking across our two acute hospitals and various other services in South Tyneside and Sunderland. Thisis an exciting time in the field, as microbiology and ID services work more closely together, and locally wherewe are expanding our reach within the organisation and sub-regionally. There are opportunities to work withspecialised services in the Trust, to become involved with ID liaison and clinics, to work closely with thelaboratory in Gateshead, and to further develop our antimicrobial stewardship activities. We welcomeapplications from doctors with, or anticipating, CCST in medical microbiology and/or infectious diseases.The role will be tailored very much towards the interests of the successful candidate


Main duties of the job

The main duties of the role will be tailored to the successful applicant, but will include participation in a busyday-time clinical liaison rota, validation of laboratory results, attendance at ward rounds on the Sunderlandintegrated critical care unit and liaison visits to other parts of the hospital as required. The existingconsultants work as a team, each of us with our own particular interests, and will be looking for anenthusiastic colleague to join that team.We work closely with staff across the Trust, in multiple disciplines and various grades. The successfulcandidate must have excellent clinical knowledge and interpersonal skills in order to contribute to this work.The successful candidate will be required to work one weekend in six, typically offering in-person ortelephone advice between 9am and 5pm on Saturdays and Sundays at Sunderland Royal Hospital and/or STyneside District Hospital. The successful candidate will be required to participate in an on-call rotaoperating between 5pm and 9am shared with colleagues at a neighbouring hospital, typically one night inten. On call work is recompensed in the form of time off in lieu.

Thepost-holder will contribute fully to the work of the team, including atweekends and out of hours, and will be expected to lead on services toparticular areas or departments in the organisation. Personal Attributes

* Ability to communicate effectively with patients, relatives and healthcare workers and other agencies
* Evidence of understanding of and adherence to principles of Good Medical Practice set out by the GMC


Qualifications

* Primary medical qualification
* Full GMC registration
* Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register with accreditation in Medical Microbiology, Virology and/or Infectious Diseases, or eligibility for entry within six months of the date of the AAC
* A postgraduate qualification in a relevant medical discipline


Audit and Research

* Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical practice
* Involvement in quality improvement measures
* Ability to undertake multi-disciplinary audit / audit in specialty area
* Experience of clinical research
* Undertaken research with published papers in refereed journals


Experience

* Wide experience in the fields of clinical microbiology and/or infectious diseases
* UK experience in the fields of clinical microbiology and/or infectious diseases


Management and administrative experience

* Understanding of the NHS, Clinical Governance process and resource issues
* Evidence of organisational, management and time management skills
* Evidence of management and administration experience and understanding management goals
* Attendance at a management course and / or certificate


Teaching and Education

* Experience of supervising junior medical staff
* Experience of participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
* Qualification in medical education
