1815 - Occupational Therapist Team Leader (Ortho/Surgical)

The interview date for this role will be 3rd September.

An excitingopportunity has arisen for a motivated and experienced Specialist OccupationalTherapist to obtain further leadership experience through a 12 month fixed term/secondmentinto the team lead position in the Orthopaedic OT team. This successfulcandidate will work as part of a job share for this role.

The successfulcandidate will provide specialist OT assessment and intervention to the traumaand elective orthopaedic services as well as the general surgery service. Thisincludes the completion of community based assessments as required within theOT service as well as those within the acute setting.

You will beexpected to participate in a rota covering 08:00-18:00. The preferred workingdays for the successful candidate are Monday, Wednesday and Thursday howeverthese may be negotiated on successful application. The service does notcurrently cover weekends or bank holidays however, this may change during thecourse of this role.

The post holderwill provide leadership to the orthopaedic team, as well as providing widerleadership cover across other specialities within the OT team, supporting theOT Service Manager at Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

Main duties of the job

To provide leadership to occupational therapy (OT) staff in the AcuteOrthopaedic and Surgical, Medical and Community Teams.

To plan, co-ordinate, deliver and evaluate the OT service; alongside theOT Service Manager, throughout the Trust. This includes ensuring the Teamsworkload is appropriately prioritised and work is effectively distributed andco-ordinated across the Team on a day-by-day basis.

To develop team goals with the OT Service Manager and Clinical Director,and support the Team in achieving them.

To carry a caseload, providing advanced assessment and treatment ofpatients within the speciality who may have a complex and/or chronicpresentation, and to determine clinical diagnosis and occupational therapytreatment indicated.

To lead on servicedevelopments for the OT Acute Orthopaedic and Surgical, Medical and Communityservices. Deputising for the OT Service Manager as required.

Person Specification


Experience

* Significant post qualification experience of OT with experience of working at a senior/specialist level in a relevant field
* Broad range of clinical experience in a variety of OT settings, e.g. must include NHS acute hospital setting
* Managing a team of staff with evidence of appraisal, supervision and teaching
* Documented evidence of continuing professional development (CPD portfolio), post graduate study
* Management and operational training, e.g. LEO
* Experience of clinical audit and research
* Experience of recruitment and selection


Knowledge and Awareness

* Specialist knowledge and application of current best practice in Occupational Therapy
* Sound working knowledge of Acute Medical, orthopaedic, surgical and Elderly related conditions and the impact on Occupational Health
* Understanding of joint working in the management of patients requiring acute rehabilitative intervention
* Understanding of current OT and where AHPs fit into the NHS Plan, or an ability to develop this
* Understanding of NHS direction and partnership working
* Working knowledge of the use of the NHS KSF for performance appraisal and creation of personal development plans
* Evidence of specific responsibilities
* e.g. committee membership


Qualifications

* Diploma or Degree in Occupational Therapy
* Current Health Professions Council registration
* COT Accredited APPLE Clinical Fieldwork Educator qualification, or working towards
* Recognised leadership training or working towards
* Member of British Association of Occupational Therapists
* Leadership or Management Qualification (or working towards) Certificate/Diploma
* Relevant post graduate qualifications to masters level, or working towards
* Hold European Computer Driving Licence, or other IT intermediate skills

Skills and Abilities

* Demonstrates ability to lead a team and to facilitate therapy team working, managing and motivating staff
* Skilled and effective communicator, both written and orally, with all disciplines, patients and carers
* Identifies own personal characteristics that contribute to effective team working
* Basic computer skills including knowledge of word processing and presentation packages and the internet
* Able to impart skills and knowledge to others both formally and informally
* Proven evidence of effective self-management including time, prioritisation, clinical caseload and ability to work to deadlines
* Ability to work independently and monitor workload of team
* Ability to guide and direct staff less experienced including therapy assistants and students in clinical practice
* Demonstrates evidence of understanding and application of CPD requirements outlined by the HCPC
