Job summary Band6 Community Midwife Severn Valley Community Midwives Team Are you an enthusiastic motivated Band 6 Midwife who hasa passion for working with women and families in the community? Then please join one of our well-established communitymidwifery teams within Worcestershire. An opportunity has arisen within the SevernValley Community Midwives Team, based at the Kidderminster Treatment Centre. The post is a fixed term 12 month contract tocover maternity leave, working 22.5 hours per week. Main duties of the job You will have the opportunity to work independently yet be part of an integrated team who provide women and families with excellent evidence-based care. Working as a community midwife provides unique access to the dynamics of family life within the local community and true multiagency working. Job description Job responsibilities JobPurpose: To assess and providethe full range of care needs to develop, implement and evaluate programmes ofcare throughout the antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal period for women andtheir babies. To provide effectiveleadership and to act as a good role model. To supervise juniorstaff and to teach qualified and unqualified staff, acting as a mentor, asappropriate, providing advice and support as necessary. Work autonomouslywithin guidelines and spheres of professional practice. Key Duties: Patient Care: To assess, develop,implement and evaluate programmes of care. To be responsible forthe organisation of midwifery care for the patients assigned to you. Utilise the fullskills of a midwife practitioner (both integral and extended) to a namedcaseload of women. To discuss with theTeam Leader development and changes both midwifery and medical, which affectpatients directly and indirectly. Provide care tobereaved patients and their relatives, breaking bad news and supporting otherstaff undergoing this process. Communicateeffectively with multi-disciplinary professionals and agencies, ensuringseamless care at a high standard. To take appropriateaction to ensure the safety of patients, including the delegation of patientcare to midwives, with the appropriate level skill at all times. To report any accidents/incidents to the TeamLeader. To ensure thatmidwifery procedures/guidelines are implemented and maintained in accordancewith the policies of the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust and nationalguidance. To ensure thatacceptable stands of care are maintained and, where necessary, instigatechanges in agreement with the Team Leader. To be fullyconversant in dealing with complex midwifery problems such as child protectionissues. Education & Training: Supervise thetraining of qualified and unqualified staff and assist junior staff to developclinical and managerial skills, in accordance with their level of competence. To act as a preceptorfor junior staff. To participate inteaching for all learners in accordance with their objectives, working closelywith local education providers. To provide supportand supervision as a mentor to student midwives. To participate inteaching programmes as required. Maintain knowledge ofcurrent midwifery practice by reading relevant journals and attending studydays where appropriate, promoting research-based practice in agreement withteam leader. To organise andprovide training programmes in accordance with the identified needs for theward. To participate infurther post-registration training, as evidenced by developments in practice. Management: To autonomouslymanage a caseload, making decisions and acting on care needs as they arise. To participate in theco-ordinating and allocating of work to staff. To inform and discusswith the Team Leader any problems regarding management and/or care of thewomen. Maintain the custodyof controlled drugs according to statutory procedure, ordering replacements,checking and administering all drugs according to the Worcestershire AcuteHospitals NHS Trust. To participate inaudit programmes. To take all measuresto ensure safety and report all accidents/incidents to the Team Leader and tomonitor the safe and effective use of all equipment and the economic use ofsupplies. Maintain accuratemanagement records at all times, ensuring appropriate reporting mechanisms areused. To assist in otherwards/department of the maternity services if the clinical situation orstaffing levels demand. To become familiarwith ward/department budget and efficient and effective utilisation ofresources. Be conversant withTrust and other Policies and Procedures and mechanisms in place for effectivecare and efficient management of the Maternity Unit. Professional: To maintain aprofessional attitude at all times developing the role of the midwife in thebest interest of the women and profession in accordance with Nursing &Midwifery Council and Midwives Rules. Be responsible formaintaining accurate and contemporaneous midwifery records, written andelectronic in accordance with Midwives Rules (1998) Rule 42. To be aware ofextended personal and professional development. To attend courses andconferences as relevant according to the requirements of the role of anexperienced midwife. Develop competenciesin the use of equipment in the clinical area, attend teaching sessions asappropriate. To attend courses andconferences as relevant. To be conversant andcomply with the Trust policies and regulations and attend compulsory lecturesas instructed.
