Overview

Are you considering a career in Emergency Medicine? We are looking for enthusiastic doctors looking to develop their clinical, academic and leadership qualities. We have a proven track record of helping doctors pass the MRCEM and FRCEM exams and go on to become Consultants in Emergency Medicine.

We are a busy Emergency Department in a District General Hospital located in Watford, Hertfordshire. You will be working as a Senior Clinical Fellow within an established Middle Grade tier, ably supported by a dynamic Consultant body.

Main duties and responsibilities

* Assessing, diagnosing and treating patients within the ED and CED.
* Continuing clinical responsibility for the patients in your charge, including proper delegation to and training of others in the team.
* Advising junior doctors and Nurse Practitioners on patient management and authorising referrals to specialty teams.
* Liaising with other specialists and GPs as appropriate and leading treatment of patients in the resuscitation area.
* Providing shop floor supervision and direct patient care as a senior clinical fellow at registrar level in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Watford General Hospital.
* Ensuring rapid assessment and management of patients in A&E and contributing to an acute care perspective.


About the role and development

This post offers a unique opportunity to gain experience in acute care from an A&E perspective, with consultant presence on the shop floor for 16 hours daily (8 am to midnight), 7 days a week, to support learning and patient care.

The department includes roles such as the ED controller, Resuscitation lead and STARR (Senior Team for Assessment and Rapid Response) to ensure early senior decision making and oversight of the ED. Middle grade doctors rotate into these roles as senior clinical decision makers. The appointee should already have or obtain during the appointment certificates in ATLS, APLS and ALS. Two Clinical Educators provide additional dedicated teaching availability. The rota provides 24-hour ED cover with 1:3 weekends. The post holder will contribute to the rota for senior EM cover and may perform mainly out-of-hours work, negotiable with the rota coordinator. The post holder is encouraged to participate in management activities to develop skills for future Consultant posts and will uphold the Trust values of Commitment, Care & Quality.


Person Specification

Education and qualifications

* Essential: MBChB or equivalent; Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice; Provider status in ALS
* Desirable: MRCEM Part A; Instructor status in ALS, ATLS, APLS or EPLS

Knowledge

* Essential: Demonstrable EM experience; ST3 level equivalent; Understanding of Clinical Audit
* Desirable: Previous NHS experience; breadth of awareness of issues in emergency medicine; competencies in ACCS and CT3 EM training; previous work at Middle Grade level in ED

Experience

* Essential: Experience in delivering and organizing teaching; experience in performing procedures relevant to Emergency Medicine
* Desirable: Trauma team leader; formal teaching courses/qualifications; experience of clinical risk management (for Simulation/Medical Education posts); established interest in Medical Education / simulation
