Job Overview

Due to the expansion of our Respiratory Department, we are looking for two Consultants to join our friendly team.

These posts offer an £18K relocation package together with up to £10K Research and Professional Development Grant to be used in the first 3 years.

This is an exciting opportunity for you to use your skills and experience to further develop local services and deliver excellent care, whilst benefiting from the incredible lifestyle that Cornwall has to offer, in an organisation that values work/life balance, with a job plan that enables you to make the most of living here.

All 10 PA job plans have 2.5 SPA as standard for new Consultants; 1.5 SPA for existing Consultants) to support professional development and quality improvement, with separate admin sessions. Additional SPA for educational, research or leadership activities are agreed in annual job plan reviews. Job plans are annualised, so that in non ward weeks, there is a day off and following the respiratory weekend on call (8am- 2pm), there are two days off. We have a generous study leave budget and study leave allowance.

We are a flexible team and although both posts are offered as substantive 10 PA jobs, we would encourage interested applicants to discuss less than full time working or fixed term appointments with us.

These roles would suit either an established Consultant looking to relocate and restore balance, or a new Consultant wanting to establish themselves in a supportive department.

This is a permanent consultant post. You must be on the specialist register or a pending a CCT date. Please check this via gmc-uk.org/doctors/ before applying as no specialist registration applications will be rejected.

The post-holders will be joining a team of seven consultant chest physicians & an associate specialist. The department has a growing complement of experienced specialist nurses, physiotherapists and a physiologist. Ward teams have a mix of trainees and recurring fellow posts & Cornwall benefits from a large pool of locums taking time out and making the most of living here. The department is based at the Royal Cornwall Hospital, in Truro, but there are opportunities to undertake community clinics throughout the county & we have a developing integrated respiratory care team.

Our main respiratory ward includes a 6 bed Higher Care Unit/ Acute Respiratory Unit, for enhanced respiratory support. We have been able to flex ward bases to accommodate covid & non -covid ARU areas when demand increases.

We offer a wide range of services including bronchoscopy, EBUS & pleural day‑case clinics, with subspecialty services in lung cancer, TB, cystic fibrosis, sleep medicine, ILD, and respiratory failure including home ventilation. We have close links with Derriford hospital in Plymouth for severe asthma, Thoracic surgery and medical thoracoscopy.

We have a comprehensive mentoring programme for all new employees together with study leave and support for revalidation and CPD.
