About the Role
We are looking for an experienced and hands‑on Accounts Manager to take full ownership of the finance function within a growing manufacturing business.
This is not a routine finance role. You will be responsible for managing the entire accounts department (supported by a small team), maintaining control of day‑to‑day financial operations, and driving improvements across systems, processes and reporting.
Our business operates within a manufacturing environment using a specialist ERP system (Progress Plus), which brings complexity and challenge. We need someone who is comfortable stepping into this environment, questioning how things are done, and pushing for better.
What You’ll Be Doing
You will take responsibility for the full finance function, including:
* Managing and developing a small team (credit control and purchase ledger)
* Overseeing all day‑to‑day accounting activities, ensuring accuracy and control
* Producing monthly management accounts and supporting year‑end processes
* Preparing budgets, forecasts and variance analysis
* Managing cashflow, working capital, and supplier/customer payment cycles
* Managing and operating multi‑currency bank accounts (GBP and EUR), including supplier payments and currency considerations for European purchasing
* Maintaining and reconciling balance sheets, including stock and accruals
* Overseeing VAT, including import VAT and compliance requirements
* Producing regular sales and financial reports to support decision‑making
* Comfortable investigating issues in detail and working through stock and system discrepancies
* Ensuring strong financial controls, including preventing revenue leakage
* Reviewing system data (including open orders) to maintain financial accuracy
* Working closely with operational teams to improve processes and reporting
* Managing insurance policies and related administration
What We’re Looking For
We are less concerned with formal qualifications and more interested in real experience, capability and mindset.
This role would suit someone who has hands‑on experience running or taking ownership of a finance function, ideally within a manufacturing, stock‑based or operational environment. Candidates may be qualified, part‑qualified or qualified by experience.
The right person will:
* Have strong, proven experience running or significantly contributing to a finance function
* Be comfortable working in a manufacturing or stock‑based environment
* Be confident dealing with complexity, imperfect systems and data anomalies
* Have a proactive mindset – someone who doesn’t just maintain systems but improves them
* Be commercially aware, understanding how finance supports business performance
* Be an effective manager, able to lead, support and develop a small team
* Take ownership and accountability for their area
* Be organised, detail‑focused and able to prioritise effectively
* Be confident communicating with both finance and non‑finance colleagues
* Experience with ERP or manufacturing systems is highly desirable, but not essential – what matters is the ability to learn, adapt and challenge.
