Overview

Cardiac Recovery Unit is a fast paced level three area that looks after patients immediately post cardiac surgery. You will provide high standard of nursing care to post-operative cardiac patients on ventilator or requiring high dependency care, working with the multidisciplinary team to enhance patient care through quality improvement initiatives.

King’s College Hospital provides tertiary cardiac care and works within the cardiovascular network to transform services across the region. The Trust is committed to staff development and education with access to educational resources and individualised training plans.

The post is offered on a permanent, full-time basis within the Band 5 Agenda for Change framework.


Job Responsibilities

* Deliver high quality, evidence-based and patient-focused clinical care to post-cardiothoracic patients requiring ventilator support and high dependency care.
* Maintain high standards of patient care at all times and adhere to the NMC Code of Professional Conduct.
* Involve and support patients, relatives, carers and friends in the care process; promote wellbeing and health education.
* Ensure clear and accurate written and verbal information is provided; maintain contemporaneous record keeping.
* Seek advice from more senior staff when appropriate.
* Work effectively as part of the immediate team and wider MDT; liaise with all MDT members to meet patient needs.
* Exercising leadership and providing support/advice to ward/unit staff, especially junior staff.
* Coordinate with discharge coordinator/bed manager to ensure efficient admissions and discharges; keep the unit sister/charge nurse informed of changes or potential problems.
* Uphold Duty of Care and Clinical Governance by adhering to trust policies, maintaining confidentiality, and respecting equality and diversity.
* Take responsibility for personal development; keep up to date with nursing and medical knowledge; act as a role model and, where appropriate, a supervisor/mentor for junior staff.


Person Specification

Education and Qualifications

* Essential: Registered Nurse (RN1) with active NMC registration at time of starting appointment

Knowledge and Experience

* Desirable: Cardiac experience or interest in moving into a cardiac environment

Skills and Competencies

* Ability to communicate effectively (written and verbal)
* Ability to work collaboratively with other staff members
* Ability to manage patients’ emotional needs with empathy and caring


Additional Information

* Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks are required; post is subject to Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975.
