Consultant Psychiatrist - Southwark CAMHS (NDS)
South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Consultant Psychiatrist for a fixed‑term role within the Neurodevelopmental service of Southwark CAMHS. The successful candidate will work alongside two other consultants to provide specialist Child & Adolescent Psychiatry care.
Responsibilities
* Assessment and management of children and young people, including routine and emergency clinical care.
* Provide psychiatric input to multidisciplinary teams and other agencies such as family early help practitioners, education colleagues and statutory/voluntary services.
* Carry out mental health and risk assessments, use of the Mental Health Act where appropriate, and support the MDT in managing these situations.
* Take responsibility for own case list and case management of children and families in partnership with the MDT.
* Use pharmacological interventions in partnership with families and care networks.
* Supervise junior medical staff (CT, ST, specialty doctor) and participate in training of medical students, psychiatric trainees and multidisciplinary staff.
* Attend and chair clinical meetings, participate in peer and group supervision, and maintain continuous professional development.
* Consider safeguarding issues, consult with professionals and refer concerns to appropriate safeguarding teams.
* Communicate sensitively with children, families and other professionals, taking account of potential barriers to communication.
* Maintain high standards of clinical record‑keeping, reporting and electronic data entry in line with Trust guidelines.
* Provide specialist advice and support to other CAMHS teams, maintain relationships with external agencies, and promote continuity of care.
* Observe agreed job plan and appraisal procedures set by the Trust.
* Maintain GMC registration, Licence to Practice, Section 12 and Approved Clinician approval, and CPD compliance with the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
* Provide cross‑cover for colleagues during leave and offer clinical input to other CAMHS teams as required.
Essential Qualifications and Experience
* Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment.
* MRCPsych or equivalent; inclusion in the Specialist Register or within six months of gaining CCT in Child & Adolescent psychiatry (or equivalent training).
* Section 12 approved and Approved Clinician status (or ability to achieve within three months of appointment).
* Clinical experience in Outpatient/Community Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and in assessing and managing complex co‑morbidities.
* Strong child and adolescent psychiatric assessment skills, good ability to relate to children, adolescents and parents/carers.
* Experience with safeguarding, capacity and consent assessment and management of serious incidents.
* Proficiency in the application of the Mental Health Act for children and young people.
* Excellent communication skills in English, both oral and written; ability to work within a multidisciplinary team and resolve conflict.
* Evidence of audit or QI participation, teaching or research experience, and proven commitment to lifelong learning and CPD.
Desirable
* Fellowship of the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
* Qualification or degree in medical education, clinical research or management.
* Experience in other relevant specialties (in‑patient psychiatry, psychotherapy, forensic mental health, paediatric liaison or crisis care).
* Training in ADI/ADOS, investigation of complaints/serious incidents, psychopharmacology, CBT or other therapeutic interventions.
* Special interest and experience in neurodevelopmental conditions and multidisciplinary liaison.
* Leadership experience, proven quality improvement projects, evidence of publication or award achievements.
