We have a new opportunity in our Cardiff office for an experienced Trust Adviser within our Trust Management and Advisory Team – part of our highly regarded Succession and Tax Practice Group. The role will ideally suit someone with extensive knowledge and experience within Trust Management, potentially gained from working within a Finance organisation or Trust company. You will work with our Trust Manager, Tax Technicians, and other members of our team to support our partners in advising trustee clients, both professional and lay.
Our wide client base and broad geographic reach make this role a great opportunity for someone with expansive Trusts knowledge to develop and apply their expertise within a legal firm framework. Our Succession and Tax Practice Group provides advice on private client matters including estate planning, Wills, Court of Protection, Estate Administration, and Trust Management.
We adopt smart working practices, with a typical week involving 2 or 3 days in the office and the rest remote. We are open to considering candidates who require part-time or reduced hours (minimum of 30 hours per week).
Typical Workload
You will handle a mix of trust advisory and supervision of administration work carried out by other team members. Responsibilities may include:
* Ad hoc trust advisory work, such as advising trustees and beneficiaries on trust distributions and tax planning (IHT and CGT)
* Planning for trusts nearing the end of their term and winding up trusts
* Implementing planning in collaboration with our Succession and Tax Practice Group
* Working with our Charities advisory team on Charitable Trusts
* Monitoring deadlines for trusts, such as ten-year charges and beneficial entitlements
* Trust Accounting support
* Preparing Inheritance Tax returns for trusts
* Supporting our Trust Manager and Trust paralegal with routine trust administration matters
* Assisting Tax technicians with specific tax/trust projects (e.g., TRS)
* Training and mentoring junior staff and sharing technical trust knowledge within the team

Skills / Experience Required
* A professional qualification such as Solicitor, Cilex, STEP, ATT, or CTA
* At least 5 years of experience in a private client or trust department in a client-facing role
* Strong ability to work accurately, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines
* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills at all levels
* Proactive attitude with the ability to challenge constructively for the best client outcomes
* Confident and personable demeanor
* Strong client and matter management skills
* Self-motivated with a strong sense of responsibility for your work
