Cheshire East Council seeks an artist or arts organisation experienced in producing work in the public realm, to both highlight the existence of the market, and promote the market as a unique, quirky destination. This brief is for external artworks, please see separate brief for internal works.
Job Description
The Commission
To complement the rebranding and physical upgrade of the market hall,
the Council is seeking to commission artworks, to both highlight the existence of the market, which is in a somewhat hidden location, and to tie in with the aspiration for the market to be a unique, quirky destination.
The main objectives of MMH artists commission are to:
* Create awareness of the refurbished Macclesfield Market Hall.
* Create bespoke pieces of art that are visually striking, appeal to visitors and businesses and speak to the heritage and culture of Macclesfield and the independent nature of market traders.
Job Requirements
Artist role
To produce designs, engage with stakeholders and commissioners and to install artworks.
Initial project proposals (with mock up artwork) are required as part of the competitive commissioning process to facilitate selection of an appropriate artist.
Following appointment the selected artist/s will then be required to undertake stakeholder engagement and consultation to gather views on initial proposals and help inform final designs aligned to the process set out below and in keeping with the brand creation project.
Ideas for stakeholder engagement may be submitted with project proposals and will be taken into account in scoring any proposals.
Job Responsibilities
* Once final designs have been agreed the artist/s will be required to install the artwork on site in accordance with Cheshire East Council's health and safety policies and to provide risk assessments and method statements on the installation requirements for the final artwork. This will include working with the Council's appointed CDM Client Advisor from the outset and being able to demonstrate previous construction/installation works.
* Provide the Council with regular progress reports in relation to the agreed timescale.
* The final artworks are expected to have a minimum lifespan of ten years. The work must be robust and practical to maintain, and the artist is expected to draft maintenance and decommissioning guidelines. Murals should have an anti-graffiti coating applied to support the duration of the mural remaining in situ.
* The delivery of the artists commission on site must be before end February 2026. All works and invoices must be completed by the end of February 2026.
