Central Nova Scotia Sport & Entertainment (CNSSE) is an industry leading independent non-profit organization that operates the municipally owned Rath Eastlink Community Centre and Truro Junior A Bearcats Hockey Club (in partnership with). Additionally, the CNSSE provides event attraction and hospitality services for the provincially owned Nova Scotia Provincial Exhibition Complex; including the regions new signature event – the Nova Scotia Stampede.

As the Head Coach & General Manger of the Truro Junior A Bearcats, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the hockey landscape of Central Nova Scotia and the surrounding region. The “Architect of Hockey Operations” reports jointly to the CEO and Executive Chairman & Governor and will be responsible for supporting many aspects of hockey related programming and business operations within the Rath Eastlink Community Centre and the Junior A Hockey Club.
The Truro Junior A Bearcats Hockey Team is a premier organization in the Maritime Junior Hockey League (MHL). With a rich history and a commitment to excellence both on and off the ice, together we strive to develop talented young athletes into successful hockey players and outstanding individuals. Additionally, as a key partner of Central Nova Scotia Sport & Entertainment, together we play a pivotal role in attracting and delivering hockey events to the region, contributing to its vibrant and successful sports culture!
We are seeking a dynamic and experienced individual to fill the dual role of Head Coach & General Manager. This position in collaboration with the VP of Hockey Operations is responsible for leading and managing all aspects of our hockey program, including player recruitment, team development, strategic planning, community engagement, and jointly supporting the mandate of Central Nova Scotia Sport & Entertainment in attracting and delivering hockey programming and special events.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Coaching:
* Develop and implement comprehensive coaching strategies to maximize team performance on the ice.
* Lead on-ice practices, drills, and game-day preparations to enhance player skills and team cohesion.
* Provide constructive feedback and mentorship to players to support their individual growth and development.
* Foster a culture of teamwork, sportsmanship, and accountability among players and staff.
Player Recruitment and Development:
* In partnership with the VP of Hockey Operations identify, scout, and recruit top-tier talent to build a competitive roster each season.
* Work closely with scouts, agents, and other talent evaluators to identify prospects and assess their potential fit within the organization.
* Develop personalized development plans for each player to optimize their skill progression and prepare them for success at the junior level and beyond.
* Establish strong relationships with players, families, and support networks to ensure a positive and supportive environment for player development.
Team Management:
* In collaboration with the VP of Hockey Operations, oversee all aspects of team operations, including scheduling, travel arrangements, equipment management, and budgeting.
* Collaborate with assistant coaches, trainers, and other support staff to ensure seamless coordination and execution of team activities.
* Implement and enforce team policies, codes of conduct, and disciplinary procedures as necessary.
* Serve as a liaison between players, coaching staff, venue operations, and ownership to facilitate effective communication and alignment of goals.
Community Engagement and Event Management:
* Act as a visible and positive ambassador for the Truro Junior A Bearcats and Central Nova Scotia Sport & Entertainment (Rath Eastlink Community Centre) within the local community and hockey network.
* Participate in community events, fundraisers, and outreach initiatives to promote the team and support grassroots hockey development, as assigned by the CEO.
* Cultivate relationships with sponsors, donors, and community stakeholders to secure financial support and enhance or economize the team’s resources and infrastructure as assigned by the CEO.
* Collaborate with Central Nova Scotia Sport & Entertainment to identify, plan, and execute hockey events, including tournaments, showcases, and championships, to showcase the region as a premier destination for hockey.
EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS
* Previous coaching experience at the junior, collegiate, or professional level, with a proven track record of success in player development and team leadership.
* Strong knowledge of hockey strategy, tactics, and player evaluation.
* Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.
* Ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
* Commitment to upholding the highest standards of integrity, professionalism, and sportsmanship.
* Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel as required.
* Coaching certifications and credentials (e.g., Hockey Canada NCCP certification) preferred.
* Strong executive presence with exceptional interpersonal and relationship building skills
* Enthusiastic team player, with strong self-initiative and ability to work to deadlines
* Clear working knowledge of budget planning and execution
* Ability to use Microsoft office suite, databases and other computer software as required
* Clear Criminal Record Check (required)
* Post-Secondary Degree or Diploma in Sport/Business Management would be considered a strong asset.
