Band 7 Oesophagogastric (OG) Clinical Nurse Specialist

A new and exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Clinical Nurse Specialist to join our Gastroenterology Service. This Oesophagogastric Clinical Nurse Specialist will work as part of our multidisciplinary team at Guys and St Thomas' Hospital.

The post holder will act as the lone CNS providing expert nursing support to patients with oesophageal and gastric conditions, including cancer, from diagnosis through treatment and follow-up. They will act as a key worker, coordinating care, offering specialist advice, and supporting patients and their families throughout their pathway.

The role involves close collaboration with consultants, surgeons, oncologists, and allied health professionals to ensure high-quality, patient-centred care, while also contributing to service development, education, and clinical leadership within the specialty.

Main duties of the job

This role involves providing expert clinical leadership and acting as the key worker for patients with oesophagogastric conditions, ensuring a coordinated, patient-centred approach across the entire care pathway.

The post holder will lead specialist services, manage complex caseloads, and work collaboratively within the multidisciplinary team to deliver safe, effective, and timely care from referral through diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up. The role also includes service development, quality improvement, education, and contributing to research to enhance patient outcomes and experience.

Within this directorate, the role of the Oesophagogastric Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) is central to the coordination and delivery of high-quality patient care. The CNS provides expert clinical knowledge, leadership and support across the patient pathway for patients and their families.


Job responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities
* Act as the point of contact for patients, coordinating care across the full pathway
* Lead CNS-led clinics and telephone assessment clinic
* Coordinate MDT meetings, prepare cases, and ensure timely communication and implementation of outcomes
* Manage endoscopy pathways (EMR, ESD, RFA) including scheduling, referrals, and follow-ups
* Work collaboratively with internal teams and external organisations to ensure seamless care delivery
Quality & Patient Safety
* Monitor patient pathways to ensure timely diagnostics, treatment, and follow-up
* Contribute to audit, service evaluation, and continuous quality improvement initiatives
* Ensure high standards of care, governance, and adherence to clinical protocols
Education & Training
* Provide specialist education and support to patients and carers throughout their care journey
* Act as a mentor and resource for nursing and MDT colleagues
* Contribute to the development and delivery of training programmes within the specialty
* Support learning and development of junior staff and students
Research & Service Development
* Participate in audit, research, and data collection to improve clinical outcomes and pathways
* Support implementation of evidence-based practice and innovation within the service
* Contribute to the development of clinical guidelines, protocols, and new ways of working
* Demonstrate strong clinical leadership and act as a role model for best practice
* Manage own caseload, acting as a lone CNS and managing the workload effectively within a complex clinical environment
* Support service planning, reporting, and performance
General Responsibilities
* Maintain accurate, confidential patient records in line with professional standards
* Communicate sensitively and effectively, including delivering complex or distressing information
* Work within organisational policies and professional regulatory requirements (NMC)
* Demonstrate a compassionate, adaptable, and proactive approach to patient care and service delivery


Person Specification


Experience

* Significant experience working with HPB/Upper GI/Oncology and Hepatology patients
* Registered Nurse (RN)
* Experience working autonomously
* Experience of Clinical Leadership
* Experience working as a Clinical Nurse Specialist
* Working with the Multi Disciplinary Team
* Experience with coordinating complex patient pathways
* Experience managing nurse led clinics
* Experience in Service Improvement or Quality improvement incentives
* Experience preparing for MDM and writing up outcomes


Education & Qualifications

* Degree and/or postgraduate diploma or equivalent experience
* Postgraduate Education
* Advanced Clinical Assessment qualification
* Masters Degree in Nursing or Advanced Practice
* Specialist training in Hepatology, Oncology, Palliative Care or Upper GI/HPB


Skills

* Advanced communication skills
* Experience to support patients receiving complex diagnoses
* Ability to prioritise and manage a caseload independently
* Ability to develop and establish good working relationships with the MDT
* Knowledge of relevant National Guidelines and Pathways
* Experience data collection, audit and quality improvement projects
* Ability to run nurse-led clinics
* Leadership and service development skills
* Experience managing telephone/virtual clinics
