Purpose

The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) is looking for a Sustainability Data Manager to join the Innovation Team, who will be working closely with different teams across BAS to help the organisation decarbonise its operation and drive the delivery of the different carbon reduction strategies. The successful candidate will need excellent analytical skills and previous experience in energy and carbon assessments. They will also play a vital role in understanding and presenting data underpinning decisions for the BAS Decarbonisation Management Group and the Antarctic Infrastructure Modernisation Programme (AIMP) across energy, carbon, travel and wider sustainability. They will use the data for assessments and evaluations to diagnose issues, as well as identifying opportunities to reduce carbon, working closely with the Project Managers and staff across the AIMP, with Estates engineers and facilities managers providing data, information and delivering analysis to facilitate carbon reduction within infrastructure and wider projects. You will be assessing the energy performance of buildings and the savings achieved following completion of interventions or carbon reduction projects. The successful candidate will analysing the energy, fuel, and carbon data across Scope 1, 2 and 3 and reporting on performance across all areas of BAS operations including Cambridge offices, Antarctic Research Stations, Ships, Aircraft, Business Travel and activities linked to major projects under AIMP. You will be leading on the BAS carbon accounting work and reporting internally to the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). This role supports the delivery and upkeep of targets and reporting, as set out by the UKRI sustainability strategy, as well as the mandatory HM Treasury Greening Government Commitments (GGCs). The successful candidate will collaborate with other members of the Net Zero team to facilitate the BAS Net Zero transition, focusing on carbon reduction and improving sustainability in infrastructure, transport/logistics and supply chain. They will also collaborate with the Environment team and the AIMP team and feed into committees and working groups particularly those with a focus on Net Zero/Sustainability. The postholder will be taking part and contributing to meetings with NERC and other research organisations to share best practice and develop benchmarks. You will contribute to communicating the work undertaken at BAS as part of the Net Zero agenda to the wider polar community and the public.


Duties


1. Carbon accounting and reporting – supporting growing demand for reporting

* Ensuring timely collation of data (Scope 1, Scope to and Scope 3) within the environmental database and validation of this data prior to reporting deadlines.
* Contributing to the sustainability section of the UKRI Annual report through provision of environmental case studies and GHG performance data.
* Assessing progress on the various decarbonisation projects. Providing support and advice to project managers and engineers to ensure net zero objectives and targets can be met.
* Report on AIMP emissions and wider Scope 3 activity such as construction projects, chartered ships and aircraft, commercial freight, including purchased goods and services.


2. Energy/Carbon data management and analysis (Cambridge, Antarctic Stations, Ships, Aircraft, Travel data, Projects (construction + embodied carbon data))

* Ensure proper operation of the data collecting systems and processes e.g. metering systems, sustainability and energy/carbon data collection processes and forms. Work closely with IT and facility managers, report issues and work together to resolve them.
* Improve and automate data collection methods.
* Improve and ensure quality and accuracy of data.
* Produce dashboards, energy performance reports and graphics.
* Compare the actual energy consumption of new buildings, redevelopments and retrofit measures with that predicted.
* Participate / help investigations into any performance gap.
* Use the information from meters and other sources to audit building/ship energy use and make recommendations for improvement.


3. Assist with the activities of the Decarbonisation Management Group

* Develop an Energy Auditing Programme for all Antarctic Stations, Cambridge and SDA:
o Prepare energy check lists
o Do interviews with the users to understand energy use patterns
o Deliver energy audits annually to identify opportunities for improvement
o Train staff to deliver energy audits in Antarctica
* Assist with the implementation of the BAS Travel strategy (travel data analysis, carbon budget allocation to teams, encourage teams to set targets).
* Contribute to information gathering for feasibility studies and business cases.
* Update information on the Carbon Management Plan.
* Prepare information/engagement material for the BAS website and the intranet.
* Engage with BAS Staff and promote the Net Zero Carbon Strategy.
* Assist at workshops with different BAS groups or other stakeholders.


4. Present your work in small groups and contribute to wider audience presentations.


Skills, Qualifications and Experience


Essential

* Strong background in:
o Data management and reporting through studies and work experience.
o Energy performance of buildings, energy efficiency and carbon in the build environment.
o Energy/carbon reduction systems and technologies.
o Greenhouse gas accounting and reporting processes.
* Experience in energy monitoring and data analysis to identify trends and performance gaps.
* Ability to collect and collate facts, figures and opinions, identifying gaps, patterns and trends.
* Energy/Sustainability/Engineering or other science related degree, or an equivalent level of knowledge and analytical skills gained through work experience at a similar level.
* Excellent numerical skills to:
o carry out accurate and in-depth data analysis.
o use data to produce reports and support feasibility work.
o produce presentation material (dashboards, graphics).
* Excellent Microsoft Excel skills.
* Effective time management skills to be able to plan and prioritise workload and team resources effectively with minimal supervision and use initiative to solve problems.
* Very good communication skills with the ability to engage with a range of stakeholders and present complex analysis/information clearly and concisely.
* Experience in producing quality reports.
* Excellent team-working, and ability to contribute towards a positive team dynamic.
* Committed and passionate about sustainability issues and able to inspire and persuade others.
* Flexible approach to work and willing to travel.


Desirable

* Experience in whole life carbon assessments and wider Scope 3.
* Experience in building energy/renewables modelling (IES, energyPRO or other tools).
* Relevant auditing experience e.g. against standards such as ISO14001, 50001, PAS2060, Carbon Trust.
* Evidence of relevant ongoing CPD training (with particular focus on carbon management).
* Professional registration with a relevant professional body e.g. Energy Institute, ISEP, CIBSE.
* Programming skills (e.g. Python or other).
* Medical fitness to travel to Antarctica, should it be required.

The role holder will be required to have the appropriate level of security screening/vetting required for the role. UKRI reserves the right to run or re-run security clearance as required during the course of employment.
