We’re looking for a dedicated volunteer to support ourTai Chi Qigong group—a gentle, seated movement and meditation session for people living with advanced illness in Hastings and Rother.
About the Wellbeing Programme
Our Wellbeing Programme offers a range of therapeutic activity groups, one-to-one sessions and telephone support for people living with an advanced, progressive illness in the community of Hastings and Rother, as well as their carers. We are currently looking for a compassionate and committed volunteer to help support our Tai Chi Qigong group.
About the Group
This group offers a gentle, seated form of Tai Chi based on the practice of Qigong—a calming ‘moving meditation’.Sessions are tailored to the needs and physical abilities of participants. Volunteers help create a warm, safe space where members can connect with their bodies, focus on their breath, and explore guided meditation.
Your Commitment
* When:Weekdays (half a day per week)
* How long:6-week programme (weekly attendance expected)
* Where:St Michael’s Hospice, Hastings
What you’ll doing?
Your Role Will Include:
* Setting up the room and assisting with tidying up
* Welcoming and interacting with patients
* Offering light emotional support through conversation and active listening
* Serving refreshments to patients and carers
* Assisting with questionnaires (if appropriate)
* Helping patients connect with community groups (e.g., signposting, problem-solving)
* Sharing relevant updates with the Wellbeing Team
Skills and Experience We’re Looking For:
* Understanding of St Michael’s Hospice and its community role
* Experience working with vulnerable individuals
* Awareness of safeguarding and how to raise concerns
* Strong communication and interpersonal skills
* Ability to work independently and as part of a team
* Comfortable using IT systems (e.g., Microsoft Office)
* Basic understanding of health & safety and data protection
* Reasonable physical fitness to assist during activities
Personal Qualities:
* Empathetic and sensitive to the hospice environment
* Comfortable supporting individuals facing illness, death, and dying
* Able to maintain appropriate boundaries
* Non-judgmental and open-minded
* Enjoys working with others in a diverse team
* Open to feedback and ongoing training
* Flexible and adaptable as the programme evolves
* Respectful of diversity and inclusion
* Comfortable working face-to-face and remotely (e.g., phone or online)
