A South London Borough is seeking an experienced Highways Inspector to support the delivery of a safe and well‑maintained highway network. The role involves undertaking inspections, identifying defects, and ensuring appropriate remedial works are arranged and completed. You will also act as a key point of contact for residents, managing enquiries and keeping customers informed throughout the process.
This position requires regular site visits. Applicants must hold a full UK driving licence and have access to their own vehicle.
Key Responsibilities
Undertake routine and reactive visual inspections of highway assets, including carriageways, footways, and street furniture
Identify highway defects and assess risk in line with Council policies and statutory guidance
Raise works orders with the Council's highways contractors and monitor progress through to completion
Issue defect notices to statutory undertakers/utility companies and track remedial works
Manage customer enquiries, complaints, and service requests relating to highway issues
Update CRM systems and website comments to keep residents informed of progress and outcomes
Liaise with contractors, utility companies, internal teams, and other stakeholders
Maintain accurate inspection records and support reporting requirements
Skills and Experience Required
Previous experience as a Highways Inspector or in highways maintenance/engineering
Good working knowledge of highway inspections, defect identification, and maintenance processes
Experience working within a local authority or public sector environment (desirable)
Strong communication and customer service skills
Ability to manage multiple inspections and enquiries simultaneously
Competent IT skills, including use of inspection or CRM systems
Essential Requirements
