Support Staff / Teaching Assistant – SEN/SEMH Setting
Location: Northumberland
Job Type: Term-time only (plus 3 additional days)
Hours: 30 hours per week
Salary: £16,000-£17,000 - Actual salary (already pro-rated), dependent on qualifications and experience
Start Date: September

Are you an enthusiastic and resilient individual with a passion for supporting children with additional needs? Our client, a specialist education provider, is seeking Support Staff / Teaching Assistants to join their trauma-informed team working with children with SEN (Special Educational Needs) and SEMH (Social, Emotional, and Mental Health) needs.

This is a rewarding opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of vulnerable young people in a small, nurturing alternative education setting.

Key Responsibilities
1. Support teaching staff in delivering high-quality education to children on a 2:1 or 1:1 basis
2. Plan and deliver structured interventions tailored to individual student needs
3. Follow guidance from senior staff to implement daily routines and educational activities
4. Build positive, trusting relationships with students and families
5. Maintain a safe, organised, and welcoming learning environment
6. Respond calmly and effectively to challenging behaviour using trauma-informed strategies
7. Liaise with schools and external agencies as needed
8. Report safeguarding or health and safety concerns immediately
9. Uphold confidentiality and adhere to all policies and procedures
We are looking for individuals who:
10. Have at least 1 year of experience working with children or families with SEN, SEMH, or behavioural needs
11. Are confident managing challenging behaviour and setting clear boundaries
12. Understand trauma-informed practice and the emotional needs of vulnerable learners
13. Are excellent team players with a positive and proactive attitude
14. Prioritise safeguarding and can respond quickly to incidents
15. Are committed to promoting inclusion, diversity, and equality
16. Build strong professional relationships with colleagues, families, and external partners
Additional Information
17. Term-time only role (plus 3 days during school holidays)
18. Enhanced DBS and two references required prior to placement
19. Multiple positions available
20. This role involves working directly with children who may present with challenging behaviour—confidence in behaviour management is essential
