Are you interested in how data and evidence is used to plan our communities? This is an opportunity to develop your Geographical Information Systems and data handling skills, working within a high performing local authority.
If you have a genuine interest in GIS, data collection and analysis, our Spatial Strategy & Insights team is looking for a new team member with experience. The role is advertised on a temporary basis to resource projects during 2026-27.
The Role:
Our Spatial Strategy & Insights team works across the County Council and with partners to provide GIS (Geographical Information Systems) and other datasets to help make decisions and plan services.
We are looking for a GIS & Data Monitoring Assistant to help establish map-based and data systems about planning and the environment - this is an ideal opportunity for someone who is passionate about collating and presenting data with accuracy. You would be required to use GIS to assist the team to monitor and present spatial data and develop digital solutions.
What you’ll do:
In this role, you will work with a wide range of GIS datasets, identifying and organising information from external sources to support complex queries and deliver accurate data records to customers. You’ll extract, check and interpret spatial data to ensure high-quality inputs, using GIS tools to analyse information and present your findings to senior GIS officers and monitoring teams. Your work will play a key part in maintaining data integrity and supporting informed decision-making across the organisation.
You will also contribute to data migration projects, offering guidance to managers on the effective application of GIS. A key part of the role involves helping to monitor and improve systems and procedures related to spatial data, as well as responding to queries from service departments and external agencies. As you develop, you’ll build strong working relationships and a valuable network of contacts to support ongoing service improvements.
What we’re looking for:
With development and training, the successful candidate will be required to support the Senior GIS Officer. The role would suit someone with the ability to use various IT systems, and experience and competence in using GIS. We are looking for someone who can communicate clearly and with a willingness to offer assistance to the team.
This opportunity is advertised as full-time; however, we welcome applications from people wanting to work on a part-time basis and/or wanting to work flexibly.
Applications will be scored by how candidates demonstrate they address the essential criteria in the Job Summary. Please fully explain how you meet the essential requirements, as specified in the Job Summary within the application form.
