This Finance Manager supports the smooth running of the Department for Transport’s (DfT) Digital, Information and Security (DIS) Directorate. The Directorate has responsibility for Digital Service, Information and Corporate Security, with circa £40m budgets and multiple complex contracts.
The Finance Manager role is responsible for the management of digital-focused financial activities for DfTc and all directorate financial activities. This includes preparing monthly and ad hoc financial reports that meet budget holders' needs; ensuring that budgets and forecasts are accurately managed, uploaded and reported; and responding to commissions from senior stakeholders. You will be working closely with Finance Business Partners, Commercial colleagues and other key stakeholders, including budget holders, offering analysis and challenge, and providing and interpreting timely financial information that 'tells the story' and adds insight.
You will be working with large and complex budgets, delivering both analysis and effective challenge to assumptions when reporting to senior leaders. Your technical knowledge, insight, and ability to work constructively with people at all grades will make you a valued contributor to the decision-making process and a champion for change.
Your key responsibilities will include, but will not be limited to:
* Leading on the management of digital-focused financial activities for the DfTc and all directorate financial activities, leading on:
- Budget profiling and allocation.
- Annual Business Planning exercise.
- Budget cash spend forecasts.
- Expenditure reporting.
- Routine month-end activities in line with reporting timescales, reviewing and interpreting data to ensure accuracy of reporting and provide insight into the numbers.
- Asset creation and annual review, leading to depreciation forecast exercise.
- Charging back to other organisations where we provide services to them.
* Ensuring financial controls are in place for all contracts in the directorate and digital contracts across DfTc. Monitor and manage contracts to accurately monitor digital spend. Use information from Finance Business Partners and Commercial, to influence, challenge and gain value for money.
* Having an understanding of financial risks, issues and opportunities and ensure these are captured, monitored and escalated where necessary, providing assurance to senior leaders on financial and contract management in DIS.
* Enabling self service capabilities where possible, allowing individuals access to information without any intervention.
* Making business recommendations to senior leaders and budget holders, being mindful of business need, policy requirements, service level agreements and available budget.
* Identifying trends, highlighting risk and sharing insight to drive up opportunities for business improvement.
* Leading on in-year and end-year financial activities; responding to commission and supporting on external reporting, such as to HM Treasury and Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, often to short timescales.
* Manage team members, empowering, motivating and coaching to enable effective delivery.
