Job summary

Applications are invited for a full-time substantive Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgeon with a special interest in Hip & Knee Surgery within Cardiff and Vale University Health Board.

University Hospital of Wales is the first Major Trauma Centre to launch within Wales. The Major Trauma Centre is part of an inclusive and collaborative South West and Mid Wales Trauma Network spanning six Health Board areas.

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board is recognised as a teaching centre of excellence in a wide range of clinical services.

Although this post is full-time, consideration will be given to applicants who require flexible working arrangements.

Applicants should either be on the Specialist Register or be a Specialist Registrar within six months of their expected date of receipt of a CCT / CESR(CP) at the time of interview.

You will be able to take advantage of the excellent Consultant contract for Wales. The basic salary range for this post is £106,000 per annum to £154,760 per annum.

Applicants must ensure they provide names and contact details of referees covering at least the last 3 years of their employment/training history in full. In addition, applicants who are currently or have most recently been employed as a substantive Consultant or as a Locum Consultant in post for more than 12 months must also provide the name of their Medical Director as an additional referee.


Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will work as part of a Trauma Team for the management of general and specialist trauma. The trauma on-calls will be part of the general rota running in tandem with a 6-person Major Trauma Centre Orthopaedic rota. In the elective service the post holder will work with other specialist Hip & Knee surgeons managing referrals both locally and tertiary referrals from other centres around South Wales.

The appointee is required to have sub-specialty interest in Hip & Knee Surgery.

Academic interests will be encouraged; research and teaching in collaboration with Cardiff University's School of Medicine will be expected.

Person Specification


Qualifications

* On GMC Specialist Register for specialty / Specialty Registrar with CCT/CESR (Combined Programme) due within 6 months of interview date


Experience

* Broad training and experience in Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery
* Fellowship experience in Trauma
* Fellowship experience of Hip & Knee Surgery
* Fellowship experience of Robotic Surgery
* Independent experience of revision knee arthroplasty
* Experience as Locum Consultant in hip & knee primary


Skills

* Evidence of effective team and multi-disciplinary working
* Effective and demonstrable communication skills
* Formal training in computing skills


Clinical Governance

* Evidence of participation in clinical audit and understanding role of audit in improving medical practice
* Evidence of proactive engagement with appraisal and revalidation (or equivalent)


Research

* Evidence of significant research experience in publications


Teaching

* Evidence of teaching medical students and resident doctors


Management

* Evidence of effective leadership skills
