Work pattern: Flexible to meet the needs of the service, core service hours are 9-5pm.

HEALTH NURSERY NURSEAn opportunity has arisen to appoint an enthusiastic Health Nursery Nurse to work as part of the integrated 0-19 Universal Service within the Blackburn & Darwen area to deliver the Healthy Child Programme, universal and targeted provision to:

Pre-school and primary school aged children and their families. You will utilise your knowledge of child developmental milestones to provide key elements of the Healthy Child Programme and targeted provision based on need as delegated by a SCPHN/ Team Leader. You will be required to safeguard children in line with safeguarding policy and work in a variety of community settings including lone working in clients' homes. You will require excellent communication skills, the ability to work in partnership with partner agencies and have a strong commitment towards delivering children public health services.


Main duties of the job

The post holder as part of the 0-19 Service will work under the direction of the Health Visitor (SCPHN-HV) and Specialist Public Health Nurse (SCPHN-SN).

The post holder will work across the 0-19 team with pre-school and primary school aged children and their families. They will utilise their knowledge of child developmental milestones to provide key elements of the Healthy Child Programme and targeted provision based on need as delegated by a SCPHN/ Team Leader. They will be required to safeguard children in line with safeguarding policy. They will work in a variety of community settings including lone working in clients' homes.

The post holder will work in line with the Trust's corporate objectives and will be expected to make a positive contribution to the provision of health services. The post holder will be expected to work in line with the Trust values delivering excellent care with compassion.

Presents a positive image of the service when meeting service users and partners

Maintains effective communication and works collaboratively with service users, partners and other key stakeholders to ensure an integrated approach to addressing locally identified

Organise and participate in health promotion and health education activities to inform the public about

Ensures participation with children, young people and families who use services at a community and individual level acting as an advocate to facilitate the views and choices expressed by children, young people, families, groups and communities where appropriate

Seeks feedback using friends and family test as per service pathway

Is inclusive to service users by using appropriate tools/resources to ensure understanding has been achieved i.e. language link workers, sign workers and telephone interpretation services

Maintain local communication systems for lone workers

Participates fully in the CAF process participating in meetings as required and acting as CAF lead professional when appropriate

Accompanies Health Visitor/Specialist Public Health Nurse/Public Health Staff Nurse to case conferences, family support meetings, core group meetings if providing packages of care for that child/family.

Provides support within the community for building community capacity as part of a team approach

Makes referrals to agencies as appropriate and within scope of role following physical, social and development screening and assessment of infants and children

Delivers delegated care packages using agreed models to carer / parents / child on topics such as breastfeeding, vaccinations, weaning, sleep, childhood safety, behaviour, positive parenting strategies.

Assumes delegated responsibility for child health and development assessments and screening (in homes, schools and other community settings) as part of the delivery of the Healthy Child Programme.

Demonstrates awareness of deviations from the norm within childhood growth monitoring and is able to act on information received

Uses a range of approaches in practice i.e. Solihull

Actively promotes health education and healthy lifestyles within the community including use of negotiation skills where appropriate and make referrals into the behaviour change support services

Delivers family health drop-ins based on community need under the direction of the Health Visitor/Specialist Public Health Nurse

Undertakes 3rd party/premises risk assessment as and when required

Actively contributes to the implementation of the safeguarding agenda within the skill mix team, adhering to Lancashire Safeguarding Childrens Board/LSCFT policies and procedures

Adheres to policies and procedures relating to vulnerable adults and understand own

Contributes to the quality agenda in line with local and national frameworks e.g. CQC

Demonstrates competence and make best use of IT systems in order to facilitate and improve service delivery and influence the wider policy agenda

Reports complaints, errors, concerns in line with policies and procedures

Acts as a mentor within the team to support and facilitate learning needs

Maintains service development and leadership frameworks and support others to do so


Person Specification


Qualifications and experience

* oNNEB/ BTEC National Diploma in Early Years/ NVQ Level 3 in Early Years Care and Education/ CACHE Level 3 Diploma in Child Care and education or equivalent.
* oWorking with children and observing, assessing and recording their developmental milestones
* Up to date knowledge of child development
* Maths and English GCSE
* oPrevious experience in a Community Setting
* oCultural awareness and understanding of impact of poverty on health
* oUp to date knowledge of safeguarding
