Noise Solution is an organisation which genuinely and authentically embraces diversity, equality and inclusion through every aspect of its governance, staffing and delivery. We are committed to actively encouraging and promoting the employment of women, disabled and black and minority ethnic employees as these populations are underrepresented in our industry and beyond.
About Noise Solution
Noise Solution is an award-winning organisation that uses music and digital storytelling to drive meaningful change for young people facing challenges such as school exclusion, mental health difficulties, and social isolation. Our work is underpinned by Self-Determination Theory (SDT), which highlights the importance of autonomy, competence, and relatedness in fostering motivation and well-being.
As the organisation embarks on a period of ambitious growth, we are looking for a Board Chair, to provide strategic oversight, guidance, and direction to our current Board of Non-Executive Directors.
Main Responsibilities
The Chair has a strategic role to play in representing the vision and purpose of the organisation. You will ensure that the Board functions correctly and efficiently, that there is full participation at and between meetings, and that effective decisions are made.
1. To lead and direct the Board
* To ensure the Board provides a clear strategic direction for the organisation, and actively seeks out opportunities to help further its strategy.
* To ensure the organisation fulfils its legal, regulatory, and policy responsibilities.
* To ensure the Board regularly reviews major risks and associated opportunities, and satisfies itself that systems are in place to take advantage of opportunities, and manage and mitigate the risks.
* To ensure Board members fulfil their duties and obligations for the effective governance of the organisation.
* To plan and run meetings in compliance with our governing document, and the needs of the organisation.
* To ensure matters are dealt with in an orderly, efficient manner.
* To bring impartiality and objectivity to meetings and decision-making.
* To facilitate change where needed, and mediate conflict and disagreement if required.
* To review governance performance and skills.
* To facilitate recruitment and renewal of Non-Executive Directors, as required.
2. To work with the Directors
* To establish and build a strong, effective, and constructive relationship with the Directors (the Operations Director and CEO), to ensure they are held to account for achieving agreed strategic objectives.
* To support the Directors to achieve these aims, whilst respecting the boundaries which exist between the Chair and Director roles.
* To ensure regular contact with the Directors, developing and maintaining open and supportive relationships within which each can speak openly about concerns, worries, and challenges.
* To conduct annual appraisals with the Directors, recognising areas of success and highlighting areas for further support and development.
* To ensure the Directors have opportunities for ongoing professional development and appropriate external professional support.
3. To represent the organisation
* To work with the Board and Directors to strategically position the organisation as a sector leader in digital youth work, engagement, impact measurement, and music mentoring.
* To harness personal and professional networks for the benefit of the organisation, supporting the organisation to achieve its strategic aims.
* To effectively communicate the vision and purpose of the organisation.
* To advocate for and represent the organisation at external meetings and events.
* To be aware of current issues which may effect the organisation.
Additional Responsibilities
* To maintain an up-to-date knowledge of the funding landscapes, policy changes, and emerging trends which may impact the organisation.
* To develop trusted and open relationships with the Board, creating spaces for respectful challenge and debate to ensure good decision making.
