By joining our Prisons Health Care Team, you will not only look after the healthcare needs of our patients residing in secure environments, but also have the opportunity to have a real impact on promoting health and well‑being. Our healthcare services work to a 7 day week working model to ensure our patients’ healthcare is managed and maintained to the highest standards at all times.


Main Duties

* Provide high quality emergency care and minor injury treatment to patients with both primary care and acute care needs in a prison setting, playing an active part in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care.
* Serve as a Registered Paramedic working with healthcare centres and on the wings/houseblocks within the prison environment.
* Work as part of a team of primary care nurses within an HMP site.
* Function autonomously within your sphere of competency while supporting less experienced staff, assessing patients, planning care, administering treatment and discharging or referring them as appropriate.

Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities

Central and North West London NHS Trust is committed to providing safe, effective services and providing patients and families with a positive experience.

* Act as a positive role model to staff and patients.
* Conduct invasive procedures where appropriately trained and competent.
* Respond to all emergency codes in accordance with agreed protocols, including covering night shifts.
* Perform procedures such as suturing, IV access, haemorrhage control and wound care.
* Provide cardiac and CVA intervention, monitor physiological observations using a structured approach, and recognise acutely ill patients (e.g., ABCDE, ECG, CVA pathways).
* Determine appropriate destination for the patient and initiate treatment linked to regulated care pathways in collaboration with other professionals when hospital transfer is not required.
* Assess individual health needs and perform first and secondary reception screens.
* Provide holistic care and administer treatment within local guidelines and within one’s own scope of practice.
* Maintain competencies and work within scope of practice limits.
* Administer prescribed medication and medication within Patient Group Directions or via Independent Nurse Prescribing (if qualified).
* Advise within the smoke‑free prison environment.
* Develop and maintain advanced clinical skills such as suturing and paramedic‑led clinics.
* Develop and maintain advanced clinical skills and knowledge in relation to dynamic patient case mix.
* Refer or signpost to appropriate health professionals and services.
* Provide patient information and education.
* Ensure Trust’s clinical protocols are adhered to at all times.
* Work within relevant code of professional conduct.
* Support line managers.
* Participate in the setting of patient care standards based on sound research.
* Maintain personal and professional development plans and discuss needs with mentors, supervisors and line managers.
* Participate in regular clinical supervision.
* Support junior staff and students.
* Comply with fire precautions, evacuation and emergency resuscitation procedures.
* Assist with triage roles as appropriate.
* Maintain standards of infection control within the unit and assist patients with their own infection control needs.


Person Specification


Education and Qualifications


Essential Criteria

* Qualified Paramedic with current HCPC registration.
* ALS/ATLS/PALS qualification for Paramedics.
* Evidence of continuous professional development (CPD).
* Post‑registration qualification in autonomous practice or equivalent.


Desirable Criteria

* Teaching and assessing qualification.


Previous Experience


Essential Criteria

* Proven post‑registration experience, including evidence of working in A&E, primary care environments, and minor injuries/illness units.
* Experience of working autonomously.
* Evidence of teaching and assessing others.
* Experience of working within a multidisciplinary team.
* Evidence of participation in clinical supervision (either as a supervised or supervisor).


Desirable Criteria

* Experience within Accident & Emergency and Primary Care environments.
* Experience of managing a team.
* Evidence of team leadership and supervision of junior staff.


Skills and Knowledge


Essential Criteria

* Evidence of autonomous working and skills in physical assessment required for diagnosis and treatment.
* Ability to produce detailed and accurate records.
* Evidence of extended skills such as suturing.
* Effective verbal and written communication.
* Basic IT skills.
* Demonstrable clinical expertise and knowledge of audit.
* Demonstrable critical reasoning skills and decision making.
* Evidence of multi‑professional/multi‑agency working.
* Ability to prioritise patient care.
* Perceptive, flexible and effective leadership skills.
* Ability to demonstrate effective use of staff and resources.
* Complete understanding of medicolegal aspects of the role.
* Full understanding of equal opportunities, diversity and cultural issues that may arise.


Desirable Criteria

* Knowledge of current professional issues, health promotion, clinical governance, national initiatives (e.g., NICE guidelines), NHS framework issues, pharmacology, evidence‑based practice.
* Standard for Better Health.
* Experience of working in a criminal justice setting.
