PV & BESS Commissioning Engineer – Utility-Scale Renewable Projects
Location: International Travel – Southern Africa, Eastern Europe & UK Base Salary: £100,000 per annum + Benefits (company car or allowance, phone, laptop, private healthcare, travel expenses) Employment Type: Full-time, Permanent
About the Role
My Client is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Commissioning Engineer to lead the commissioning and final integration of utility-scale solar PV and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects across Southern Africa, Eastern Europe, and other international locations.
This is a critical field-based engineering role focused on bringing complex renewable energy assets online safely, efficiently, and to the highest technical standards. The successful candidate will oversee the final stages of project delivery — from detailed testing and functional verification to performance optimisation and handover — ensuring that every system operates at peak reliability, efficiency, and compliance from day one.
Reporting to the Managing Director, you will work closely with design teams, project managers, and on-site installation crews, acting as the technical authority during commissioning. This is an exceptional opportunity for an experienced engineer who thrives in dynamic, international environments and wants to play a key role in delivering next-generation renewable infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
· Lead the commissioning of utility-scale solar PV and BESS installations, ensuring safe, efficient, and compliant integration into grid and site infrastructure.
· Work in strict adherence to Scope 12 standards throughout all stages of commissioning, ensuring Scope 12 is fully implemented and complied with during the design, installation, and final commissioning process.
· Perform and oversee pre-commissioning inspections, system verification, and functional testing of all components including inverters, battery systems, transformers, switchgear, control systems, and communication interfaces.
· Validate system performance against design specifications, Scope 12 requirements, and contractual obligations, and troubleshoot any technical issues arising during testing and energisation.
· Execute system integration tests including PV generation performance, storage charge/discharge cycles, communication protocols, SCADA integration, and remote monitoring functionality.
· Coordinate with engineering, electrical design, and construction teams to resolve design or installation discrepancies before commissioning.
· Prepare and maintain comprehensive commissioning plans, risk assessments, test documentation, and handover reports.
· Conduct site acceptance testing (SAT) and factory acceptance testing (FAT) where required, witnessing and verifying compliance with Scope 12 and project specifications.
· Train and support client operations and maintenance personnel on the correct use, safety, and optimisation of installed systems.
· Ensure strict adherence to health, safety, and environmental (HSE) standards during all commissioning activities.
· Support the optimisation of performance post-commissioning through data analysis, fault diagnosis, and corrective actions.
· Contribute to continuous improvement processes by feeding back lessons learned into future project design and delivery.
About You
Requirements:
· Proven experience commissioning large-scale solar PV, BESS, or power infrastructure projects.
· Strong electrical engineering background, with deep understanding of power systems, grid integration, protection systems, and control architectures.
· Proficiency in commissioning procedures for high- and low-voltage systems, SCADA integration, communication networks, and energy management platforms.
· Experience with site acceptance testing, functional verification, and performance validation.
· Excellent problem-solving and diagnostic skills with the ability to resolve technical issues under pressure.
· Thorough understanding of HSE regulations, electrical safety practices, and commissioning risk management.
· Demonstrable experience working to Scope 12 standards in PV design, installation, and commissioning.
· Willingness and ability to travel internationally for extended periods to oversee commissioning activities.
· Strong communication and documentation skills, with experience preparing detailed technical reports and handover documentation.
Desirable:
· Experience with hybrid renewable systems and grid services integration.
· Familiarity with predictive maintenance platforms and data-driven commissioning tools.
· Background in training and supporting client operations teams.
Package
· Competitive salary of £100,000 per annum
· Comprehensive benefits package including company car or allowance, private healthcare, mobile phone, laptop, and full travel expenses
· Opportunities for international travel and exposure to landmark renewable projects across Africa and Europe
· Dynamic, collaborative environment focused on innovation and sustainability
· Career progression opportunities in a rapidly growing renewable energy company
