You’ll help shape the future of Metrolink’s rolling stock, ensuring our trams run safely, reliably and efficiently every day. Working with the Tram Engineering Manager, you’ll drive maintenance excellence, hit safety targets and provide vital engineering expertise across the business. In this hands-on role, you’ll tackle complex investigations, support improvement projects, and work closely with teams and third parties to keep our fleet in top shape. You’ll also turn data into insights, build strong cross-organisational relationships and help deliver a high-performing, inclusive culture. Key accountabilities will include: Drive the performance of the Tram Engineering team by ensuring objectives, standards and KPIs are consistently met, contributing to a high-performing and results-focused culture. Foster an inclusive and safe workplace, championing the FREDIE values, taking a zero-tolerance approach to behaviours that conflict with the culture and demonstrating zero-harm principles in all ways of working. Lead complex root cause analysis and safety-critical investigations on Metrolink’s rolling stock, providing engineering insight to prevent future issues and enhance overall reliability. Keep ahead of industry best practices and deliver continuous improvement initiatives to optimise the whole life-cycle performance and costs of Metrolink’s fleet. Build and maintain strong cross-organisational relationships, effectively liaising with third parties on tram modifications, repairs and component manufacturing to support business objectives. Ensure the integrity and accuracy of data in the asset management system, developing performance reports to monitor reliability and inform strategic decisions. Support and drive internal projects, collaborating with stakeholders across KAM and TfGM to deliver contractual obligations and business plan activities successfully. What you’ll bring: Qualified to degree level or equivalent experience in an Electrical/Electronic, Electro-Mechanical, or Railway Engineering, with membership (or working towards) a recognised engineering institution. Strong engineering knowledge and analytical skills, including FMECA, Fault & Event Trees, Root Cause Analysis, and experience delivering technical engineering projects, interpreting complex technical information and applying relevant legislation and light rail/railway standards. Experienced with maintenance systems and data management, including Computerised Maintenance Management Systems and Microsoft Office tools for reporting and analysis, ensuring data-driven decision-making. High standards of discipline, integrity, and problem-solving, with a pragmatic, practical, and solutions-focused approach to engineering challenges and operational decision-making. Proactive, adaptable, and resilient, motivated by continuous learning and able to thrive under pressure while embracing change and supporting improvement initiatives. Collaborative team player and strong communicator, able to engage confidently at all levels, manage priorities, coordinate across teams and stakeholders, and build positive, productive relationships. Commercially aware, capable of delivering safe, reliable, and cost-optimal engineering solutions in a safety-critical environment, with rail or light rail experience advantageous.
