Paediatric Junior Sister - Band 6

Due to our new skill mix increase and establishment enhancement, we are now looking forward to recruiting additional Band 6 roles alongside our existing Band 6s. This is a dynamic role with the opportunity to work across other Trust sites as needed. We offer Paediatric Crisis SIM courses, APLS training, Paediatric A+E courses and a variety of professional development opportunities. Plus, our dedicated Paediatric ED Practice Development Nurse is here to support you every step of the way.
Job responsibilities
* Professionally accountable for standards of practice as set by the NMC Code and relevant professional guidelines.
* Undertake the nurse in charge role for the department.
* Supervise, support and educate other team members, including nursing and medical students.
* Ensure safe and effective clinical practice and enhance patient experience.
* Ensure promotion and implementation of trust policies and effective delivery of organisational objectives.
* Promote the Trust's vision, values and divisional objectives.
* Ensure high quality clinical practice based on current nursing/medical evidence.
* Promote effective and safe flow of patients through the department.
* Advise on health promotion and prevention of illness.
* Advocate for children and families using professional expertise, knowledge and judgment.
* Observe changes in patients’ attitude, behaviour and emotional state, physiological observations and report/escalate findings to relevant health care professionals.
* Achieve and maintain clinical skills and competencies specific to the post, including triage, venepuncture, intravenous cannulation, ECG monitoring, NG tube insertion and administration of IV fluids, medications and blood components.
* Recognise and act to avoid situations detrimental to patient health and well‑being, escalating to the Paediatric ED Nursing Manager (Band 7) or HoN/ADoN as required.
* Take responsibility for correct administration and custody of medicines according to Trust Policy, including safe administration of intravenous drugs, transfusion of blood and blood products where required.
* Ensure an effective and efficient patient journey by supervising the planning and coordination of admissions/discharges, episode of care, smooth transition to other settings, safe and effective discharge and optimising communication with multi‑professional and inter‑agency teams.
* Encourage and utilise patient feedback to improve experience.
* Safely administer medication under patient group directives.
* Safely triage and escalated care for children and young people attending the department, with continuing assessment and evaluation during their stay.
* Undertake pain assessments and evaluation of interventions.
* Work in collaboration with clinical colleagues, safeguarding teams and external partners to safeguard children and young people.
* Follow current infection control advice and guidance, seeking specialist support as required.
Person Specification
Core skills – Essential
* Registered Nurse – Child (RSCN/RNC) with current NMC registration.
* Experience within an acute or emergency Paediatric setting.
* Experience of effective shift coordination, management of patient care, staffing and resources in an acute or emergency Paediatric setting.
* Mentorship, teaching and assessing.
Core skills – Desirable
* Module in a relevant specialist area (e.g., children’s emergency nursing module) and Degree (or working towards) in a relevant health subject.
* Experience of Paediatric emergency nursing at Band 5.
* Advanced competency in nursing skills (triage, assessment, plastering, IV/central line management).
