Paediatric Audiology Clinical Support Worker

We are afriendly and innovative department looking to recruit an enthusiastic clinicalsupport worker for our paediatric audiology service under our new leadershipteam. Quality, patient centred care is the focus of the service.

The role willinclude assisting highly specialised healthcare practitioners in hearing assessmentsfor children under the age of 4 or older children with additional needs. Thisinvolves engaging with the children through toys and simple games, while theaudiologist presents sounds or performs other tests.

Main duties of the job

PersonalQualities

Playful andenthusiastic demeanour. A large part of this role will be playing with anddistracting young children, while they have their hearing tested.

Skills andExperience

Confidentworking with young children and children with additional needs. Ability tofollow verbal instruction precisely. Ability to follow written protocols andguidelines with direction from audiologists. Confident and clear two waycommunication between the support worker and audiologist is required for anaccurate hearing test.

Training

Full practicaltraining for the role will be provided. An essential part of this role is notreacting to sounds when they are played to avoid visually cueing children tothe sound.

Practicalities

The role willbe based at Sunderland Royal Hospital but community clinics at Washington andJarrow will also be covered. The hours will be compressed working 8am to 6pm over4 weekdays. There may be flexibility in job sharing these hours depending onthe successful applicant.

Job responsibilities

* Tosupport Audiologists in providing an efficient, safe and effective PaediatricAudiology service.
* Towork under direct supervision in hearing assessment clinics, engaging babiesand children at the required level of play for the Audiologist to completetheir assessments.
* Toparticipate in a range of clinical and non-clinical activities within thedepartment, including scannning earmould impressions and maintaining stocklevels.
* Tocontribute to administrative tasks and housekeeping to help maintain anefficient, professional and patient centred service.
* Thepost will be based at Sunderland Royal Hospital, Washington Galleries HealthCentre and Palmer Community Hospital.


Person Specification


Physical Skills

* Ability to quickly and swiftly adapt position and activity to the needs of the patient.
* Precision and speed to look in childrens ears and place headphones/insert earphones when the child may be active and not cooperative.


Experience

* Working with people, preferably within a hospital environment.
* Basic computer literacy.
* Previous work in a health care setting.
* Experience of caring in a professional setting.
* Basic understanding of manual handling principles.
* Experience working with children.


Qualifications

* Good standard of education (GCSE grade 9-1) or equivalent level qualifications.
* NVQ level II in care.


Skills and Knowledge

* Able to work effectively under direction as part of a team.
* Ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of individuals.
* Literacy and numeracy skills.
* Good organisational skills.
* Effective written and oral communication skills.
* Basic IT skills.
* Basic Makaton or BSL signs.
