Job overview
This is a substantive post following the expansion of the paediatric surgery department. You will join the seven substantive paediatric surgical consultants on a permanent basis, providing elective and acute general paediatric surgery and contributing to the paediatric gastrointestinal elective service at Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital and its network partners.
Main responsibilities
* Provide day‑to‑day all‑round surgical care for patients at Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital.
* Participate in a 1 in 6 week attending and on‑call rota, and in outreach clinic/theatre rota.
* Support the development of the paediatric gastrointestinal elective service and build relationships with regional partner hospitals.
* Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including paediatrics, neonatology, anaesthetics, radiology and pathology.
* Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching of medical, nursing and allied health professionals.
* Engage in academic research programmes and contribute to national and international publications.
* Ensure safeguarding and patient‑safety responsibilities are upheld.
* Deliver services that are financially responsible and efficient.
Experience and qualifications
* FRCS or its recognised equivalent.
* Full and specialist registration (with a licence to practise) with the GMC, or eligibility for registration within six months of the interview.
* For UK training: a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Paediatric Surgery, or within six months of receiving it by the interview date.
* For non‑UK training: evidence that qualifications are equivalent to the UK CCT, confirmed by the GMC by the date of application.
Clinical skills and experience
* Paediatric surgical skills and experience.
* Understanding of clinical risk management.
* Evidence of development to improve understanding of equalities issues.
* Ability to communicate well with patients and staff.
* 5+ years of previous consultant experience.
Knowledge
* Broad experience within and outside the paediatric surgical specialty.
Organisation & planning
* Experience and ability to work in multi‑professional teams.
* Understanding of NHS clinical governance and resource constraints.
* Evidence of managerial skills, including achievements or courses attended.
Teaching skills
* Evidence of an interest and commitment to teaching.
* Recognised teaching qualification.
Academic & research
* Evidence of participation in audit.
* Research experience.
* Prizes and honours.
* Appropriate progression of career to date.
Personal attributes
* Good communication skills, both oral and written.
