Product Safety Engineer
Crawley - Hybrid
We’re recruiting a Product Safety/System Safety/Safety Engineer to support both our Avionics (FLX) and Training & Simulation (TTS) Business Units. We serve a wide variety of domestic and international customers in the aerospace sector, covering both the Civil and Military domains.
Current project and programmes include:
1. Supporting the development of our next generation Mission Management Systems or Secure Information System for military helicopter platforms
2. The continuing support and sustainment of our in-service products, including Avionics Mission Systems and Secure Intercom Systems.
3. Conduct Safety Management activities associated to our Civil and Military Approvals such as Part 145 Maintenance and Part 21G Production activities.
As the Safety Engineer you will providing technical safety inputs to the project/product team, being responsible for developing and execution of safety engineering activities in support of the Product Safety Manager and Safety Assurance Manager. This position can be available at Engineer or Senior Engineer level dependant on experience.
Key Responsibilities
As a Product Safety Engineer within Thales, you will:
4. Ensure that the safety engineering activities are executed in accordance with the company’s process, applicable industry standards and best practices
5. Perform hazard identification studies (HAZID, HAZOP), hazard analyses (PHA, SHA, OSHA, FTA), safety analyses (FFMEA, FMECA, FSA) and hazard management
6. Define safety requirements; analyse and evaluate design compliance with safety requirements and safety principles
7. Review the adequacy and completeness of the safety evidence and produce the corresponding Safety Case artefacts for sign off by the Safety Authority.
Experience and skills we are looking for:
8. Experience in a technical safety role in a safety critical environment.
9. Good understanding/knowledge of Product Safety legislation within the UK and Europe (i.e. Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974, General Product Safety Regulations 2005, CE marking requirements, etc.)
10. Good working knowledge of system safety lifecycle, system requirements definition, safety design concepts (system and software), safety and risk analysis
11. Demonstrable experience of best practices, safety methods and techniques (e.g. HAZID, HAZOP, PHA, SHA, OSHA, FTA, FMEA/FMECA, FSA) and hazard management
Desirable Skills & Experience
12. Experience of System Safety Engineering in the training & simulation sector is desirable however experience of Safety Engineering in other complex, safety focused and regulated organisations such as rail, aerospace, nuclear or oil & gas would be advantageous
13. Demonstrable experience in the application of safety standards (e.g. Def Stan 00-056, Def Stan 00-051, IEC 61508) or similar is highly desirable.
14. Use of DOORS and JIRA.
Security Clearance Statement
This role will require SC Clearance. It would be advantageous if currently held, however, if not currently held, it is a requirement that the successful applicant will undergo, achieve, and maintain SC Clearance. Please visit the UKSV website for further guidance.
To be eligible for full SC, you generally need to have resided in the UK for the last 5 years. In some circumstances, a minimum of 3 years’ residence in the UK over the last 5 years may be accepted, with additional overseas checks.
