Applications are invited for a behavioural science fellowship with a focus on workplace resilience, performance and wellbeing, jointly hosted by GCHQ and the University of Manchester. The fellowship will provisionally run between April 2025 and March 2026.
Organisations such as GCHQ provide rewarding careers, but some roles are based in high pressure and challenging contexts e.g. investigation of serious and organised crime. The Fellow will help us to identify the evidence base for interventions that can support our workforce and establish what works. We are also looking to understand gaps in the current evidence base. We expect the Fellow to bring their existing expertise and experience to shape and steer this project to successful delivery within an agreed timeframe. This research will assume a standard academic form and fellows will be expected to pursue publication in relevant academic journals, suitable for submission in the Research Excellence Framework, subject to GCHQ approval.
Working in partnership with academics and colleagues in GCHQ the fellow will:
* Conduct a comprehensive review of published work on workplace resilience, performance and well-being.
* Produce a publishable article on the basis of their review.
* Produce regular internal reports and a final report, summarising the evidence and abstracting key recommendations for good practice.
Fellows will be based primarily in the University of Manchester with regular travel and visits to GCHQ office and travel in the UK. They will have mentors in each organisation, to offer guidance and support. Mentors will work together to ensure coherence and consistency in their advice and support. Fellows will therefore gain experience of two very different research environments and of negotiating the complexities of working between them.
Applicants should have completed a PhD (or equivalent e.g. occupational psychology chartership) and have relevant experience in a field such as: organisational or occupational psychology, clinical or health psychology research, psychology of workplace wellbeing and/ or performance and/ or resilience.
Demonstrated experience and expertise in workplace wellbeing and resilience will be advantageous, as will demonstrated experience of undertaking systematic evidence evaluation such as Rapid Evidence Assessments and/ or meta-analyses of interventions. This expertise and experience should be explained in a letter of application and short-listed candidates will be asked to make a brief presentation on the topic.
